Mrs. Olivia Cumilla Boulware Brown

Mrs. Olivia Cumilla Boulware Brown passed away unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, after years of extended illness. Boulware Jr. Olivia and her late brother were sent to boarding school at Kings Mountain Academy in Kings Mountain. After graduation, she attended and graduated from Wilberforce University in Dayton, Ohio, and began as a social worker in Forsyth County. After several years, she became an elementary school teacher and after 27 years, she retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools. She spent her teaching career as a second grade teacher at Fourteenth Street Elementary School and Old Town Elementary School where she retired in 1994. She was an active member of Wentz Memorial Congregational United Church of Christ since birth and served faithfully in many capacities, including a member of the Women's Fellowship to the very end. For many years, she was a member of the choir where she shared her beautiful soprano voice until her health forbade her to continue. She was a member of the first African-American Girl Scout Troop in Winston-Salem and continued her love and service for Girl Scouting for more than 15 years as assistant leader for Brownie Troop No. 637 at Wentz until her death. She was an avid pinochle and bridge player and spent much of her leisure time playing with several clubs within the city. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Trevonia Brown-Gaither; a son-in-law, Reginald Gaither; a grandson whom she adored, Lemuel R. Gaither; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Wentz Memorial Congregational United Church of Christ . The Rev. Renee Griffin will officiate, and internment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 13, at Russell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wentz Memorial Congregational United Church of Christ, 3435 Carver School Road.
