Obituary

On May 5, 2026, heaven opened its gates to welcome one of its most radiant souls. Mary Helen Mims (Metts), 78, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, gently passed from this life, leaving behind a legacy woven with love, laughter, and a spirit that touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Mary Helen was born on July 12, 1948, to the late Mary (Ash) Ford and Willie B. Metts, Sr. She received her early education in the Benson School District and went on to earn her diploma from Job Corps in Washington, D.C. — a proud milestone that reflected her tenacity and strength of character.

She built a life of purpose and hard work, retiring with honor as a Sales Associate at Sears and Roebuck in New Jersey. Those who knew Mary Helen well will smile remembering her signature talent for conducting investigations and always finding a way to prove her point — all delivered with that warm, infectious smile that made her impossible to resist. She had a gift for making people feel seen, heard, and loved.

Mary Helen was preceded in death by two brothers, John Metts formerly of Chicago, IL, and Willie B. Metts Jr. formerly Peoria, IL; and five sisters, Rose Marie Mims-Ward formerly of Camden, NJ, Clara Bell Mims-Ryals formerly of Benson, NC, Willie Ela Metts, Shirley Rose Metts, and Geraldine “Penny” Metts formerly of Peoria, IL. She now rests in their company, reunited with those who went before her.

Mary Helen is survived by her beloved only son, James L. Mims Sr. and his wife, Tanyelle L. Little; two brothers, David (Ernestine) Mims of Winston-Salem, NC and Williams Metts of Camden, NJ; one sister, Shelly Ford of Raleigh, NC; four cherished grandchildren, James L. Mims Jr., Jarred (Jalissa) Mims, Taiye Mims, and Jaelan Mims; three precious great-grandchildren; and a loving host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends whose lives were forever enriched by her presence.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30am Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 11:30am on Wednesday at the Chapel.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this time. May God’s richest blessings rest upon each of you.

Final Message

"For we know that if our earthly house, this tabernacle, were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” 2 Corinthians 5:1–9
