In Loving Memory of Arthur Frederick Gray III
Winston-Salem, NC - Mr. Arthur Frederick Gray III, beloved father, brother, mentor, educator, veteran, entrepreneur, and patriarch of the Gray family, peacefully transitioned from labor to eternal rest on May 11, 2026, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A man of extraordinary wisdom, humor, generosity, and unwavering dedication, Arthur’s passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Yet, his enduring legacy of service, mentorship, compassion, and love will continue to illuminate the lives of generations to come.
Arthur was born on May 19, 1941, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to the late Arthur Daniel Gray II and Ella Louise Bryant Gray. Raised from humble beginnings, he learned early in life the values of perseverance, integrity, discipline, faith, and hard work; principles that became the foundation of his remarkable journey and lifelong commitment to uplifting others.
Arthur possessed an infectious smile, a brilliant mind, and a sense of humor capable of brightening any room he entered. Beloved by family, friends, colleagues, students, and neighbors alike, he was truly a beacon of light whose presence brought encouragement, laughter, wisdom, and hope. Whether in the classroom, on the basketball court, behind a DJ booth, mentoring young people, or serving within the community, Arthur inspired others to pursue excellence while remaining grounded in humility, kindness, and compassion.
Following his graduation from Carver High School, Arthur proudly enlisted in the United States Army, where he faithfully served his country with distinction for three years before receiving an honorable discharge. Through determination and the assistance of veteran educational benefits, he continued his educational journey at Winston-Salem State University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics with a minor in History. His pursuit of higher education reflected his deep belief that knowledge was one of the greatest tools for transformation and empowerment.
Arthur dedicated much of his professional life to education, serving over 35 years as a respected mathematics teacher within the Forsyth County Public School System until his retirement. A gifted educator with an extraordinary ability to make learning meaningful and accessible, he inspired generations of students to believe in themselves and strive for greatness. To many, he was far more than a teacher; he was a mentor, motivator, father figure, and trusted source of wisdom whose impact extended far beyond the classroom walls. His excellence in education earned him numerous accolades throughout his career, including being recognized as Teacher of the Year on multiple occasions.
Even after retirement, Arthur’s work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit remained steadfast. He continued operating his successful business, Gray and Gray Tax Services, faithfully serving families and individuals throughout the community with professionalism, integrity, and care. His talents and ambitions extended across many disciplines. Arthur was also a successful accountant, accomplished real estate investor, skilled referee, talented DJ, devoted veteran, and committed community advocate who passionately sought to uplift underserved members of the African American community throughout Winston-Salem.
Arthur’s generosity was not merely spoken; it was demonstrated through quiet, sincere, and selfless acts of kindness. He purchased homes not simply as investments, but as opportunities to bless others, often providing housing and support for family members and individuals in need. He believed deeply that success held little value unless it was shared with others. Arthur shared deeply treasured and meaningful father-figure relationships with those whose lives were forever impacted by his wisdom, humor, generosity, mentorship, and unwavering belief in their potential. These bonds reflect Arthur’s extraordinary ability to nurture, uplift, and embrace others as family through love, presence, and genuine care.
Those closest to Arthur understood that his greatest joy was his family. He loved deeply, gave freely, and celebrated life wholeheartedly. He especially cherished the moments spent mentoring his children, grandchildren, nephews, godchildren, students, and countless young people whose lives he helped shape through guidance, patience, and encouragement.
