A loving sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Yvonne Ballentine Fluker, was called home on Friday, October 21, 2011 in Lexington, KY. She was the fourth of six children of the late James Howard Ballentine, Sr. and Alma Jones Ballentine. She was born in Winston-Salem, NC where she attended the public schools. She graduated from Atkins High School and continued her undergraduate education at Winston-Salem Teachers College (presently Winston-Salem State University). She received her master's degree in education at N.C. A & T State University. She was married to the late Otis Fluker. Yvonne was a life–long educator having taught for over 35 years in the public school systems of Tuscaloosa, AL, Elizabeth City, NC, Edenton, NC and Lexington, KY. After retirement, she continued to serve as an educational consultant. Yvonne enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping, cooking, and participating in church, community and sorority activities. She was a Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. having been initiated in the Gamma Lambda Chapter at Winston-Salem Teachers College in 1954. She was a member and past president of the Beta Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. in Lexington, KY. Yvonne was a member and past president of The Links, Inc. Frankfort-Lexington Chapter, as well as a member of the National Council of Negro Women. She was a former member of First Institutional Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, which later merged with West End Baptist Church to form United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. She later became a dedicated member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lexington, KY where she sang in the choir and participated in many other activities in support of the church. In addition to her parents and husband, Yvonne was preceded in death by her sister, Lillie B. Williams and brother, James H Ballentine, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory a sister, Ruth B. Ledbetter; brothers, Brian (Phyllis) Ballentine and Bruce (Sandra) Ballentine; extended siblings Alma Lewis, Samuel Lewis and Dr. Vivian Cox; special nieces Yvonne Herndon and Sandra L. Piercy; a special nephew Wayne (Melissa) Ledbetter; a special great-niece, Tammy Williams (John McNair); and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and close family friends. Memorial services were held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2255 Eastland Parkway, Lexington, KY 40505 with the Reverend Matthew Vesey officiating. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Ivy Beyond the Wall ceremony and a ceremony by The Links, Inc. Frankfort-Lexington Chapter will precede the memorial service beginning at 6:00 p.m. A family visitation and memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 10:00 – 11:15 a.m. at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel in Winston-Salem, NC with Reverend Prince Raney Rivers officiating. Interment will follow at Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
