Obituary

Woodrow B. Haney, Sr., 88, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina departed this life on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Wake Forest Baptist Health. He was born on June 7, 1928 in Forsyth County to the late Walter Haney and Bertha Byers.

Woodrow retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after forty-two years of service. He also worked at Winston-Salem State University for ten years before his second retirement.

He was a faithful member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church for over sixty years under the late Reverend J.R. Samuels. He later joined New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor Ronald E. Speas.

Woodrow was an Honorary Past Illustrious Potentate. He was a member of Consistory #64 and a 32° Mason. He served the Bivouac Lodge for over sixty years.

Woodrow loved to fish. He enjoyed fishing with his family at Badin Lake. He would say, "I'm snatching them out of here," when he caught lots of fish. While fishing was his favorite pastime, watching Gunsmoke, Let's Make a Deal, The Price is Right, and Family Feud on television was a close second.
He was also a great cook. He liked making his signature potato salad dish for any family gathering and enjoyed helping his wife Tecora cook for the holidays.

Many will remember Woodrow for his sharp hats and bib overalls. He took pride in his appearance and always greeted you with a warm smile and hello.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sixteen brothers and sisters.

Woodrow will be sorely missed by his beloved wife of over 70 years Tecora Haney and leaves to cherish his sweet memories his five children, Norma Jean (Lonnie) Manns of Jonesville, North Carolina, Woodrow Haney, Jr., Shirley (Zannie) Brown, Linda Moore, and Larry Haney of New London, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Raynard Haney, Angela Haney, Drs. Melody (Jared) Russell of Auburn Alabama, Theresa Haney, Karla (Terius) Dolby of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Douglas Manns of Jonesville, North Carolina; and a host of great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday, August 5, 2016 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald E. Speas officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12:00noon until 1:00pm on Friday at the Church. Shriner Rites and Consistory Ceremony will be held at 6:00pm Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
