Obituary

On October 24, 2014, Winona Anita Meroney was called to rest in eternal peace. Winona, the third of four children, was born in Winston-Salem, NC on November 19, 1930 to Mercedes Butler Meroney and Dr. William F. Meroney.

An excellent student and gifted athlete, Winona played basketball at Winston-Salem State University, for the renowned Hall of Fame Coach, William "Big House" Gaines. In June of 1953, she graduated from Florida A&M University earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, (where she was voted a member of the Homecoming Queen's entourage). Later, Winona A. Meroney entered the United States Air Force, where she served the nation as a Flight Nurse. While her active duty service lasted from April 13, 1956 until she separated as a 2nd Lieutenant in November 1958, Winona's lifetime commitment to serving America's Servicemen and women would extend for another 30 years in her Civil Service capacity as a Ward, Surgical, and Head Nurse for the Veteran's Administration at the VA Hospital in Montrose, NY.

Her service years behind her, Winona enjoyed a long and active retirement as a homeowner in her beloved Winston-Salem, NC, travelling, gardening, and feeding a lifelong interest in national affairs. She was an active member and supporter of such organizations as Amnesty International which aids to end violence against women and girls; member of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Humane Society of the United States, Democratic National Committee, and the Federal Employees Association among other organizations.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Joy Meroney Headley, Leo Meroney Bouie, and William (Billy) Meroney; and dear friend, Dorothy Morgan.

Winona leaves to cherish her memory and wisdom her nephew, William L. Robinson of New York, NY; niece, Sylvia D. Robinson of St. Petersburg, FL; niece, Mercedes Meroney of Queens, NY; nephew, Phillip L. Headley of the Bronx, NY; grandnephews, Allan and Andrew Robinson; grand nieces, Kayla Robinson and Blair Robinson; and brother-in-law, Eugene Bouie.
