Obituary

William Ernest Stevenson, affectionately
called "W.E.", "STEVE", "MAMBO" & "SLIM" was the only child born to Alberta Tilman Stevenson and Ernest Bailey Stevenson in Winston-Salem, NC. He passed away August 14, 2014 after an extended illness.

He received his early education at Columbia Heights Elementary and graduated from Atkins High School in 1944. He went on to further his education at Winston Salem Teachers College, now Winston-Salem State University and completed his studies at Fayetteville State University. Later completing and receiving his Master's from A & T State University.

William enlisted in the Coast Guards for 2years, 1946-1948. He returned home and secured a job at RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. After leaving RJ Reynolds, he pursued a teaching position at Brookvale Consolidated School in Lancaster, Virginia. While teaching in Virginia he met the love of his life Paula Strachan Stevenson. William decided to return home and starting teaching in the Rowan County School System at East Spencer Middle School. After many years in the Rowan County School System he was able to get a teaching position in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System. He taught at Griffith Elementary, Kennedy High School and Hill High School from which he retired and after 33years.

William was a charter member of the Phalanx Fraternity, Consistory #64, Salem Lodge #139, Sethos Temple #170, a member of the Fayetteville State Alumni, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Men's Choir and Men's Club.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lisa Carter.

William Ernest Stevenson is survived by his wife of 52 years, Paula Strachan Stevenson; daughters, Daisy Barrett McQueen (Harold) of Washington, DC and Lynnette Stevenson of the city; grandson, William Simmons-Stevenson; grandson-in-law, William Carter, Sr.; two great-grandsons, William Carter, Jr. (Annalisa) and David Carter of Forestville, MD; two great-great-grandchildren, William Carter, III and Sienna Carter; sister, Ernestine Stevenson Davis of the city; sisters-in-law, Constance Comery (Robert), Agatha Wells, and Lillian Rolle all of Nassau, Bahamas; aunts, Estelle Conway of Buffalo, NY and Irene Kirkland of Washington, DC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Saturday, August 23, 2014 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 810 North Highland Ave. Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11am until 12noon on Saturday at the Church.
