Mr. William Dillard Amos, son of the late John Dillard Spencer Amos and Sarah Lue King Amos, was born in Winston-Salem, NC on December 2, 1926. He departed this life on October 16, 2016 in New York City. He was a product of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and the City of New York school systems. He did further studies at The University of the State of New York Education Department, Long Island University College of Business Administration, and the Central Evening Needle Trade School. Mr. Amos also completed numerous IBM data processing courses thru the New York Education Center.
During his professional career in New York City, Mr. Amos was employed with the US Treasury Department, Armed Services Medical Processing Agency, and the Department of Social Services. After 29 years of service, he retired as a supervisor from the Department of Social Services.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed entertaining, traveling, and playing bridge. At the time of his death, he was the president of the Leisure Bridge Club and a longtime member of the Prince Hall Masons. For over 60 years, he was a generous and active member of St. James Presbyterian Church, located on 141st Street in New York City.
Mr. Amos was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Katherine Amos, Sarah Amos Ephraim, Josephine Amos Caldwell, and Barbara Amos McRae; and brothers, David and Samuel Amos.
He is survived by three sisters, Viola Amos Ward, Carolyn J. Amos, and Gwendolyn Amos (Willie) Cole all of Winston-Salem, NC; a devoted nephew, Artie Andrew (Saundra) Amos; loving great-niece, Pridgen (Keith) Green; special great-great-nephew, Keith Jerome "KJ" Green; extended family and friends, Bea Hall, Calvin Bass, Violet Conyers, James Wilkinson, Dena Morrison, and Goddaughter, Shannon Wilkinson-Brown all of New York City, Joseph F. Ervin and Clara B. Barringer of Winston-Salem, NC; and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Johnny Ruff officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1:00pm on Saturday at the Chapel.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Isabella in New York City and to his very devoted and loving caregivers, Violet Conyers and Ms. Bea Hall for the part each of them played in providing William with terrific care and love during his illness.
