Wilbert Bethea, Sr. was born February 26, 1944 to the late John Willie and Margret Smith Bethea of Robeson County, North Carolina. Wilbert transitioned into eternity early morning of July 2, 2024. in Winston-Salem, NC.
Wilbert began his childhood years attending church and public school at Piney Grove UMC and R.B. Dean Public School for Blacks during the 1940's and 50's, both located in Maxton, NC. Wilbert obtained his HS GED as an adult. Wilbert lived in numerous cities as a young man before marrying his late wife, Willie Mae. Wilbert and Willie Mae welcomed two sons and one daughter together in addition to raising several other sons, Wendell, John L., and Melvin.
During the 1980's Wilbert relocated to Baltimore, Maryland. While in Baltimore, Wilbert sustained a long career as a parking garage attendant for almost 40 years. Wilbert married Linda, until her departure in 2018, and wholeheartedly helped raise grandson, David.
Wilbert's discipline and faithfulness developed when he became a member of sobriety groups: Mustard Seeds Alcohol Anonymous Baltimore, MD of 31 years, Belmont, NC AA and Unity Group AA in Winston-Salem, NC. Throughout Wilbert's life he enjoyed his daily fitness of riding his bike for many miles, traveling and enjoying time with his children, grandchildren, siblings and family. Wilbert also loved his lottery and played it everywhere he went.
Wilbert had several sisters and brothers transition before him: Sarah, Louise, Annie Lee, Margret Ann, Johnny, Clifton, Bobby, Leroy; and his son, Charles Kelly. Wilbert leaves his cherished memories to his daughter, Angela (Charlotte), and son, Wilbert, Jr. (Shanta); grandchildren, Kelly, Kaleb and Minnesa; great granddaughter, Kaedyn; sister, Lucille (Lee Artist); and brothers, Leo and Curtis.
Many lives will remember Mr. Wilbert Bethea and loved and cherished their time with him; they call him Papa, Uncle Wilbert, Brother in Law, Mr. Wilbert and BIG OTIS.
Wilbert's children and loved ones want to share a special thank you to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, to all his sincere caregivers assisting with his medical needs, and to everyone that left kind thoughts, words and social media condolences. We love you and God Bless you all.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00pm Thursday, July 11, 2024 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
