Mr. Weldon DeVoe Hay was born on July 30, 1935, to the late Deacon Rhodel DeVoe and Rose Carter DeVoe in Barnwell, South Carolina. He was lovingly raised from a very young age by Davis Hay and Lollie Mae Hay. On April 24, 2026, he was called home to be with the Lord.
Weldon received his formal education in Charlotte, North Carolina. He later enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably for four years. Following his military service, he moved to Newburgh, New York, and eventually made his home in Winston‑Salem, North Carolina.
He was a proud member of several fraternal organizations, including Ionic Lodge No. 72, Sethos Temple No. 170, Beauty of the West No. 36, and King Solomon Consistory Lodge No. 64.
Weldon is preceded in death by his parents and five brothers—Mr. Marion DeVoe, Mr. John J. DeVoe, Rev. Robert E. DeVoe, Dr. Earnest R. DeVoe, and Mr. Laudric O. DeVoe; two sisters, Mattie DeVoe and Mrs. Mae DeVoe Fields; and one great‑granddaughter, Ariel Hay.
Weldon married Katie Bennett Hay, and from their union two sons were born. His memory will forever be cherished by his sons, Leonard Hay of Winston‑Salem, North Carolina, and Darrell (Kellie) Hay of Melbourne, Florida.
He also leaves to honor his legacy: seven grandchildren—Lucretia, Latasha, Kiara, Ciara, Diarra, Darielle, and Cameron; eleven great‑grandchildren; two brothers, Mr. James A. DeVoe of Jacksonville, Florida, and Steve A. (Toni) DeVoe of Silver Springs, Maryland; and six sisters—Cornelia DeVoe (Raymond) Haywood, Florida, Carrie DeVoe Washington, Daisy Ruth Jones, and Martha DeVoe all of Jacksonville, Florida; Mary DeVoe (Columbus) Jones of Barnwell, South Carolina, and Sandra DeVoe (David) Bland of Augusta, Georgia.
He is further remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends who will continue to cherish his life and legacy.
