Mrs. Wanda Fay Hawkins-Porter, 52 of 9455 Glenn Road went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at her home. She was born April 9, 1958 in Forsyth County to Howard Hawkins and Thomasina Hawkins. She was educated in the local schools and was a graduate of NC A&T State University and did further work towards her Master's Degree there also. She was a loyal member of New Hope AME Zion Church in Lewisville, NC where she served on the Steward's Board, Christian Education Director, and Sunday School Superintendent. She sang with the Voices of Praise Choir and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Mrs. Porter was preceded in death by her father.
She is survived by her loving husband, George Howard Porter; daughter, Tempestt Porter; five God-children, Rodney Archie, Kenny Shouse, Jill Hunt, Deshanna Wilson, and Daniel Rhynehardt; her mother, Thomasina Hawkins; four sisters, Tony Hawkins, Constance Hawkins, Catherine Hawkins-Speller, and Brenda Jackson; two brothers, Ronald (Virgie) Hawkins and Rev. Willie Hawkins; two brothers-in-law, Robert (Marilyn) Porter and John (Linda) Porter; one sister-in-law, Jacquelyn Boyd; one uncle, Larry Kimbrough; two aunts, Anna Partlow and Bernice (James) Hill; her grandmother, Lena Hill; Ma Shirley and Daddy Fred Transou; two devoted friends, Connie Brown and Nancy Coor; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends, co-workers, and sorors.
Funeral services will be held 12noon Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Lewisville United Methodist Church, 6290 Shallowford Road, Lewisville, NC with Reverend Clay V. Fulton officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope AME Zion Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6pm until 8pm Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
