Walter Lewis McMehan
"Brother" "Papa"
June 23, 1937 – April 9, 2025
Walter Lewis McMehan, affectionately known as "Brother" and "Papa" peacefully transitioned from this life on April 9, 2025, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center under the compassionate care of Hospice. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, resided in Winston-Salem, North Carolina — a home filled with warmth, love, and laughter.
Born on June 23, 1937, to the late Harriet McMehan and Walter Hinson, Walter grew up in Winston-Salem and was nurtured in a close-knit community that helped shape the values he carried throughout his life. Walt received his formal education in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public School System and graduated with the Class of 1955 from Atkins High School—a source of pride and lifelong friendships.
Walter's journey through life was marked by hard work, integrity, and a giving spirit. He dedicated many years of service to RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, retiring in January 1989. Yet retirement was only the beginning of a new chapter. He became a successful entrepreneur and a highly respected Insurance Agent, earning the distinguished title of "Insurance Man of the Year!" Walt's earlier years included work at Russell Funeral Home, where he began developing the strong work ethic and people-centered approach that would define his career.
At an early age, Walter gave his life to Christ, a decision that brought him great peace and purpose. He found joy in gospel music — particularly the harmony of quartet groups — and often filled his home with the sounds of praise and worship. A true family man, Walt cherished time spent with loved ones, whether it was a simple visit or a heartfelt conversation. His presence was steady, comforting, and filled with wisdom.
Walter was preceded in death by his precious granddaughter, Arianna McMehan; his beloved stepdaughter, Tiffany Renee Smith Dixon; brother, Ernest Robinson; and two dear sisters, Marceline Miller and Francia Smith.
Left to celebrate and honor his memory are his devoted wife, Linda Smith McMehan; two loving sons, Walter McMehan, Jr. (Teresa) and Delmarcus Smith McMehan; 2 dedicated sisters-in-law, Margaret Pelzer and Sallie Morris; and a cherished stepson, Michael B. Smith (Valerie). Walter's legacy continues through his 11 grandchildren; his great-grandchildren, including his devoted grandson, Christopher Marc Smith; his dear cousin, Mildred Patterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and treasured friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity.
Walter's life was a testimony of faith, resilience, and unwavering love for his family and community. Though he has departed this earthly life, his spirit lives on in the memories he created and the lives he impacted.
"Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord." — Matthew 25:23
