Obituary

Walter Dinkins, Jr., son of Walter and Susanna Loney Dinkins was born on March 10, 1949, in Sumter County, South Carolina. Walter gained his wings on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 5:42 pm at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

He was affectionately known as Jimmy, Hudson, Ting and Boss Man by his family and friends. He was raised in Sumter County, SC where he received his education from the public school system. Later on in life he relocated to Washington, DC. He accepted Christ and was a member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church and Seat Pleasant Baptist Church, where he was an usher and sang in the choir. Later he moved on to Walker Mill Baptist Church.

Walter was a skilled Cement Finisher in Roslyn and various other construction sites in the D.C., VA, and MD areas until his eyesight failed him. He was a long-time resident of Washington DC.

Family meant the world to him. He loved his godson, Zayden. He loved to have fun, traveling, visiting with family, and going on family outings. Walter was a Washington Redskin/Commander Fan. He also loved to watch westerns and listen to oldies and gospel music. Later in life he moved to Winston-Salem, NC in April of 2017 settling down with his long-time best friend and love of his life, Mary Louise Dinkins. They were United in Marriage on April 7, 2018. He became a member of Red Bank Baptist Church on July 1, 2018.

Walter Dinkins, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Patricia Ann Dinkins; one stepson, Antonio Harris; one brother, Richard Dinkins; and two sisters, Earlene Sanders and Elease Gravett.

Left to cherish fond and precious memories are his faithful wife, Mary Louise Dinkins; one granddaughter, Ashley (Marquese) Bradshaw; three step-grandsons, Darius (Emilie) McCoy, Antonio Harris II, and DeAndre Daniels; three step-granddaughters, Kenya, Talaya, and Makhia Brabham; one great-grandson, Baby Bradshaw; one step-great granddaughter, Amara Harris; one stepdaughter-in-law, Kiszie Brabham-Harris; five sisters, Susie (Paul) Grant, Shirley Pittman, Ernestine Dinkins, Elaine Govan, and Deborah (Daniel) Harris; three brothers, Robert Lee (Polly) Dinkins, Robert (Gwen) Pollard, and Thomas Dinkins; two sisters-in-law, Wilmena Coles and Lottie Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and adopted family members and friends. Walter had two best friends that he loved and always called on, Ed Smith and Ronnie Harris.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Friday, June 2, 2023 at Red Bank Baptist Church with Rev. James Clyburn officiating. Interment will follow in Red Bank Baptist Church Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 1:00pm until 2:00pm on Friday at the Church.
