Walter Black Jr. was born May 4, 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the youngest of three children to the late Walter B. Black, Sr. and Rosa McNair Black. He transitioned to his eternal home peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2024 after a period of illness.
Walter was raised and educated in Winston -Salem and attended Colombia Heights and graduated from the historic Atkins High School in 1955. Walter furthered his education by attending his beloved Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1959. While at Alabama State, Walter excelled as a two sport athlete running the sprints and relays for the Alabama State track team and played guard on the Alabama State Basketball team. In 1956, Walter was inducted into Alabama State's Beta Zeta chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. Walter was an active student participant in the historic Montgomery bus boycotts precipitated by the actions of Rosa Parks. Walter also was actively involved in many other facets of the Civil Rights movement birthed in Montgomery, Alabama and other parts of the Deep South. After graduating from Alabama State University, Walter was drafted into the United States Army where he was stationed and served at Fort Lewis, Washington. He later received his Master's degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. After honorable discharge from the United States Army, Walter returned to the Winston- Salem area. His employment career began with him serving as the Park Director of Washington Terrace Park in High Point, North Carolina. Subsequent to that, Walter was hired by the Jack in the Box Corporation as one of the first African American managers in the Houston, Texas region. In 1971, Walter returned to Winston-Salem where he gained employment as a North Carolina State Probation Officer. His efforts there gained him the appointment to the position of United States Federal Probation Officer in 1974 where he rose through the ranks to become the Chief United States Probation Officer for the Middle District of North Carolina from which he retired in 1994. At the time of his hiring, he was one of only two African American Federal probation officers in the state and at retirement one of only seven African American Chief United States Probation Officers in the nation.
For more than 63 years, Walter was happily married to his beloved wife, Jacqueline McCummings Black. From this union they raised 4 children: Walter Black, III, Doctor Jacquese Black, Candis Black, and Doctor Perrin Black.
Walter was preceded in death by his mother, Rosa M. Black; his father, Walter B Black, Sr.; sister, Olean Black Underwood; sister, Doris Black Brown; daughter, Candis Black; nephew, Doctor Jefferson Underwood; and grand-nephew, Blake Underwood.
Walter leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Jacqueline McCummings Black of the home; son, Walter Black, III (Tanja) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; daughter, Doctor Jacquese O. Black of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; son, Doctor Perrin Black (Sophia) of Kernersville, North Carolina; niece, LeVerne Brown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; nephew, Doctor Perrin Underwood of Montgomery, Alabama; grandchildren: Olen Black (Magan) of Kernersville, Perrin Black, II (Michaela) of Nashville, Tennessee, Jai Black of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Amira Vaughn (Caleb) of Louisville, Kentucky; great-grand-daughter, Alaine Black; and a host of beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Walter's name to Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church at 1435 East Fourth Street, Winston-Salem, North Carolina in order for the church to continue a legacy of love and fellowship.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 6:00pm Friday, April 26, 2024 at Russell Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1:00pm on Saturday at the Church.
