Vivian "Viv" Glendora McLaurin Williams passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 8, 2022. Viv was a loving wife, devoted mother, sister, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend. Viv was the youngest of two daughters born to Willie "Buddy" McLaurin and Maggie McLaurin on October 26, 1933 in Sampson County, NC.
Viv attended cosmetology school under Ola Mae Forte and became licensed. She ultimately attended college and attained a Bachelor's degree at Winston-Salem State University and a Master's degree at Prairie View A&M University. She went on to teach school in North Stokes High School, NC, Killeen High School, Killeen, TX, and was one of the first African American English teachers at Ellison High School, also in Killeen. Upon returning back to Winston-Salem, she began teaching English at Brookstown College, and then transitioned to Guidance Counselor at South Stokes High School, before retiring. Her most fulfilling teaching assignment was when she worked with children with learning and physical disabilities.
Viv met her husband of 50 years, David "Sonny" Williams (of the home), in Winston-Salem. They enjoyed a blended family of 8 children over the 50 years.
Vivian was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where she regularly attended, prior to her declining health.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Maggie McLaurin; a son-in-law, Tamlin Henry; and a grandson, Chayo Siegler.
Along with her husband, Vivian is survived by her children, DeVera Owens (Terry), Lynda Smoot (William), Walter T. Little, Darryl Little (Denise), David Williams (Niecy), Kechan Striker (Michael), Kevin Williams, and Kaye Williams-Vernon (Sam); her sister, Mildred Sawyer; devoted niece, Karen Sawyer Davis (Ron). She also leaves behind grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Russell Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday, May 13, 2022 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1:00pm on Friday at the Chapel.
