Vernetta Selestine Ackers Brown, well known as "Sneaky", was born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC. She graduated from Paisley Magnet School Class of 1966. Vernetta was a member of St. John Baptist Church and enjoyed singing on the choir until her health declined. She was well known around the city as being an owner of the former nightclub, The Underground, which brought her many great memories and friends. Vernetta enjoyed reading books, playing cards, and spending time with her family. She was known to be a proud, independent, and selfless woman.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Brown; sister, Verta Parker; and her brothers, Freddie Young and Willie Growder.
She is survived by her sons, Theodore "Pookie" Ackers and Jamon "JB" Brown; beloved daughter-in-law, Adrianne Ackers; seven grandchildren who she loved dearly, Jamik'a Brown, Justin Ackers, Ja'Mora (Tamia) Brown, Jamon Brown, Jr., Jalen Ackers, Ja'Mari Mosses-Brown, and Ja'Vonnie Brown; her siblings, Patricia "Pat" Southerland-Stubbs, Deborah "Deb" Jones, and Howard Ackers; her better half of 40+
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Friday, December 8, 2023 at Russell Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, December 9, 2023 at St. John Baptist Church with Bishop Larry Spates officiating. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1:00pm on Saturday at the Church.
