Velma Jean Lindsay was born on March 6, 1944, as the oldest child to the late John Wesley and Flora "Burnette" Lindsay.  She was a 1962 graduate of Anderson High School.  After high school she attended WSSU and graduated with the class of 1966.  In 1976, she completed her Master's Degree at NC A & T State University.  She was an educator for 31 years.  She taught school in the Halifax County School System in VA, in the Jones County School System in NC, and completed her career at Rockingham County Senior High School.  At Rockingham County, she was a Charter Faculty Member and Head of the English Department. She also taught at Winston Salem Bible College.

She was very active at First Waughtown Baptist Church.  She participated in the Sr. Choir, the Mass Choir, was a member of the Trustee board, was church secretary and read the church announcements for many years.  She enjoyed travelling, reading and spending time with her family.  Velma was a very giving person and touched the lives of many.

She is survived by her sister, Kay Lindsay; brother, Steve Lindsay (Brigitte); and her beloved nephew Jonathan.  She is also survived by a host of cousins, and friends.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Russell Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon Friday, June 21, 2024 at First Waughtown Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12:00noon on Friday at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Waughtown Baptist Church in memory of Velma Jean Lindsay.
