Obituary

Valeria Annice Thompson, known affectionately as "Ms. Val", passed away on August 18, 2024, at the age of 73 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Born on January 26, 1951, in Winston Salem, she was the daughter of Luther Zeb Eldridge, Jr. and Sarah "Annie" Sheppard. Ms. Val grew up in the same city where she was born, graduating from Atkins High School in 1970.

Ms. Val's life was marked by her dedication to her family and her passion for cooking. She was a beloved figure at K&W Cafeteria, where she worked for 35 years, enchanting many with her culinary skills and keeping her recipes a closely guarded secret. Her love for her community was evident in her support for the Winston Salem Transit Authority, often seen enjoying the city's bus services with friends.

Her personal life was filled with joy and love, particularly for her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Eldridge Patterson of Winston-Salem, NC; her sons, James E. Thompson, Jr. of Kokomo, Indiana and David D. Thompson, Sr. (Ruby) of Winston-Salem, NC; a proud lineage of 22 grandchildren along with several great and great-great-grandchildren; she also leaves behind her sister, Frances (Ophelia) Irby; brothers, Kenneth R. Eldridge and Don A. Eldridge; her aunt, Hannah Eldridge; devoted friends, Red and Eva; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Valeria was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jerry Eldridge; niece, Marsha Parks; and several aunts and uncles.

Though not affiliated with a specific church, Ms. Val was a believer in Christ and held her faith dear. Her life was a testament to her belief and the love she shared with those around her.  Ms. Val's legacy of warmth, generosity, and culinary excellence will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
