Obituary

Twynetta Nanny Davis Taylor, affectionately known as “Nan" and "Nanny,” held a special place in the hearts of those who knew her. Her legacy is one of compassion, devotion, and enduring love.

Nanny was born on March 16, 1951, to the late Benjamin E. Davis, Sr. and Lucille McCants Davis in Mobile, Alabama. She departed this earthly life peacefully on April 24, 2026.

She was raised in the Catholic faith and attended Bishop Toolen High School.

She valued education and personal growth. Earlier in her career, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse, earning her diploma and license from Southwest State Technical College in Mobile, Alabama, in 1970. She obtained an Associate degree in Psychology from Bishop State Junior College in Mobile, Alabama, in 1973. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Service, with double minors in Psychology and Sociology, from Bluefield State College in Bluefield, West Virginia, in 1989.

During her college years, she consistently maintained Dean’s List honors and was recognized as Who’s Who in America's Junior Colleges in 1971. She was also nominated for Outstanding Young Woman of America for the state of West Virginia in 1988.

Nan dedicated her professional life to nursing, serving as a Licensed Practical Nurse from 1970 until her retirement. Her areas of specialty included psychiatry, geriatrics, medical-surgical care, orthopedics, neurosurgery, pharmacology, intravenous therapy, and team leader nursing. She served as a charge nurse, providing leadership and guidance to teams of nurse aides and rehabilitation technicians with compassion and excellence.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Nan gave generously of her time through volunteer service. She supported organizations such as the Children’s Home Society of West Virginia, the WECAN (Working to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect) Project, and served as a nurse hygienist for the City Recreational Center in Mobile, Alabama. She also assisted counselors at the Haggard Asbury Free Clinic in San Francisco, California, reflecting her deep commitment to helping others and uplifting her community.

She enjoyed reading, cooking, watching movies, and following her grandchildren’s sports activities online. In her earlier years, she played volleyball and basketball and sang in church and school choirs.

Nan's life was a reflection of strength, grace, and quiet resilience. She touched the lives of those around her with her warmth and kindness and will be remembered for the love she so freely shared with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Nan was preceded in death by her sisters, Jacinta Davis, Benita Davis, and Patricia Davis Barnes. She was also preceded in death by her husband- the love of her life, Jerry Wayne Taylor, Sr.; and son, Jerry W. "J.J." Taylor, Jr.

Nan leaves to cherish her memory a loving son and daughter-in-love, Ayinde and Angel Taylor; a devoted and caring daughter, Zahra Davis; seven grandchildren, Yasmeen Scott, who also provided care, J'yuana Gray, Ayinde Taylor, II, Caili Taylor, Khaim Taylor, and Kiana Miller; a great-granddaughter, Alaya Brown; a brother, Benjamin Davis, Jr (Lili); two brothers-in-law, Rev. Dr. George F. Taylor and Clyde Barnes; a special cousin, Alvin McCants; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who had the blessing of knowing her.
