On Wednesday, August 22, 1962 at 5:25pm our family was blessed with the entrance of Emma Ware Meredith's first grandson, Tracey Dorrell Meredith. "This brown-eyed baby boy stole his grandmother's heart from day one and became her world." She adored him and he was her little king. Tracey was the first of Margaret and Theodore Diggs' six children, Bomani, Norman, Dena, Terrance, and Joi. On August 11, 2019, the Lord called, Tracey answered, and went home to be with Him.
As a young child, Tracey developed a love for sports and education that would eventually open doors to greater educational opportunities throughout his life. In high school, Tracey excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. In 1980, Tracey graduated from Burlington City High School with a full athletic scholarship to Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina. Tracey's love for baseball made his dreams of attending college come true. Tracey went on to graduate from Winston-Salem State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology.
Tracey was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in which he has remained lifelong friends with his fraternity brothers and has been involved as an alumnus of the chapter for many years since his graduation.
As a young man, Tracey accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Under the leadership of Reverend Gray, Tracey became a very active member at Mt. Olive serving on the usher board. Tracey's soul was anchored in the Lord and he trusted in Him with his whole heart.
Tracey and Kiana were joined in matrimony and were blessed with three sons. They spent many wonderful years traveling, casual dining out, playing cards, traveling back and forth to New Jersey for special occasions and spending time with family.
Tracey managed restaurants for many years before obtaining his degree. After leaving the restaurant industry, Tracey was employed by Aetna for many years. Upon becoming ill, he was employed by One Main Financial as a Branch Account Manager.
Tracey was an avid shopper and was always eager to show off his buys for the day. He especially loved buying sports memorabilia of his favorite football team, The Dallas Cowboys.
Tracey was preceded in death by his grandmother, Emma Ware Meredith; and his daughter Sydni Meredith.
He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife, Kiana Young; his loving parents, Margaret and Theodore Diggs; his sons, Darnelle, Kion, and Kier; his siblings, Bomani, Norman, Dena, Terrance (Jesenia), and Joi; his only granddaughter, Keyona and four grandsons, Darnelle, Jr., Kion, Jr., Damon, and Reign; one great-grandson, Jace; his aunts, Gloria, Wendy "sister-aunt", Meridith, Ruthie, Thelma, Shirley, and one uncle, Brett; mother-in-law, Belinda Nyan; father-in-law, James Young; in-laws, Dedrick (Tarmira), Sonia, Patrice (fiancée, Ronald), and Terri (Dante); his chosen North Carolina family, Bobby, Sr., Viola, and Bobby Kimbrough, Jr. Being accepted into the Kimbrough family gave him another mother, father, and brother for life. Also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Charles E. Gray officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 10:00am until 11:00am on Saturday at the Church.
