Obituary

Deacon Emeritus Tommy Leonard Wright, Sr. was born in Macon, Georgia on November 2, 1925 to the late Ella Wright Lavender and Marcus Lee Lavender. He departed his earthly life on Monday, April 29, 2013 and peacefully transitioned into God's heavenly presence.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 35 years, Evangelist Elizabeth Whitmire Wright ("His Kitty"), who affectionately referred to him as "Sug"; one son, Tommy Wright, Jr; a daughter, Pernella Wright Keck; and a committed son-in-law, Othello Rodman Keck, whom resided with him for over twenty years.

Deacon Wright graduated from Ballard High School in Macon, Georgia in 1943. He has been a member of Mount Calvary Holy Church for over 45 years. He served as State Sunday School Superintendent for 27 years and travelled over the highways and hedges for Sunday school visits with his Assistant Superintendent, the late Deacon Willie Montgomery, witnessing of the mighty power of God. He was faithful to Bishop Harold Ivory Williams, the Patriarch of Mount Calvary Holy Churches of America, for 28 years. He was known by Bishop Williams as "His Deacon". Deacon Wright served as Chairman of the Deacon and Trustees Board, Chair of the Finance Committee, the Candy Store Man, and the Maintenance Man and worked in any other capacity as needed. He was always found raising money for God and God's House and always proclaimed that "it does not take God all day to do anything".

We all know he was a timely person and prided himself in starting those many Sunday school and YPHA Conventions promptly at 12 noon. He coordinated the "Twelve Tribes of Israel" and annual Family and Friends programs at Mount Calvary. He was President of the Carver Road Senior Citizens Club for 15 years and a member of Club 25 of GMAC Insurance Company (formerly Integon) commemorating over 25 years of service to Integon Insurance Company as a night security guard. Deacon Wright was a lover of basketball, especially the "San Antonio Spurs". He played basketball for the "Big Five" at the former Patterson Avenue YMCA and on the court, he was known as "Leftie". We all remember him doing alterations as he was a meticulous tailor trained in a New York Tailoring School. He was known as the "Cookie Man" for his many years of selling Moravian cookies. In fact, he could sell just about anything. As the late State Mother Helen Cloud put it, "Deacon Wright can sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo". He was loved by everyone from all walks of life and always gave sound advice.

He is survived by one faithful daughter, Lydia Wright Johnson (Craig) of the city; his only sister, Delores Leonard-Freeman of Augusta, GA; special daughters, Selliestean Worsley of Laurel, MD and Missionary Gracie Byrd (Robert) of the city; his grandchildren, Corey Keck (Autumn) of Morrisville, NC, Co-Pastor Tracey Keck Staley (Pastor Milton), Greg Johnson (Teresa), Tiffani Ledbetter, and Lakita Johnson all of the city; great-grandchildren, G'Taya Johnson of the city, Tyissa Hall and Tierra Hammond both of Pinecrest, CA, and Corynn and Isaiah Keck both of Morrisville, NC; one great-great-grandson, Xavier Ezell of Pinecrest, CA; a special niece and nephew, Gina Brinkley (James) of Augusta, GA and Pastor Tommy Leonard (LaTonyea) of Anchorage, AK; Godsons, Charles Irvin, III and John Lash, Jr.; a devoted friend, Pauline Mayes; his prayer partner, Bonnie Eldridge; and a host of his Mount Calvary Holy Church family members, extended family members, Spiritual sons and daughters, and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Monday, May 6, 2013 at Macedonia Worship Center with Bishop Harvey Rice officiating and Rev. Tejado Hanchell eulogist. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 6pm until 8pm Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Mount Calvary Holy Church.
