Obituary

Tommy Walter Jackson, Sr., better known as "Deacon Jackson", departed this earthly home on Sunday, January 13, 2019. Deacon Jackson was born in Winston-Salem, NC on January 5, 1938 to Pankey Harris and Candice Jackson Bracey.

Deacon Jackson was a student of Kershaw County Schools. He had a love for God, family, people and music. Through his love for music he was able to influence and help an untold number of people. He also loved the outdoors, and was an avid gardener and landscaper that brought numerous accolades from neighbors and onlookers.

Deacon Jackson held several occupations in his lifetime before finally settling as a professional cement finisher where he spent over 50 years and subsequently retiring at the age of 70.

At a young age he fell in love with the woman of his dreams, Susie Mae Scarborough and they married on June 24, 1956. He faithfully loved and adored her through 62 years of marriage. Upon marriage they moved to Winston-Salem, NC and began to raise a family of nine wonderful children. He became an upstanding and faithful member of St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years until his health significantly declined. As a member of St. Stephens, he served in the capacity of Deacon and Choir Director. He was a member of several local celebrity quartet groups which includes: Royal Travelers (co-founder), Soulful Travelers, Sensational Free Grace and the Rebirth of Soulful Travelers which included most of his sons.

Many times you could find Deacon Jackson in his yard talking with his neighbors for hours on end. Friendly and easily approachable made him a go to neighbor for those in the community.

He was preceded in death by his father, Pankey Harris; mother, Candice Jackson Bracey; son, Anthony Jackson; daughter, Kimberly Jackson; four brothers, Charlie Bracey, Crafton Bracey, John Bracey, and Flent Harris; and two sisters, Candice Cathcart and Rowilla Horne.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susie Mae Jackson; three sons, Pastor Tommy W. Jackson, Jr. (Faye) of Columbia, SC, Darryl Jackson (Carla), and Maurice Jackson of Winston-Salem, NC; four daughters, Susie Ann Jackson of Atlanta, GA, Geraldine J. Thomas, Irish (Faye) Myers, and Tonya Hubbard (Clifford) all of Winston-Salem, NC; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Maryann Moody, Helen Bracey, Jean Gause (Joseph), and Molly Cunningham (Robert) all of Winston-Salem, NC; and Josephine Harris; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a special close family friend, Adrien Myers.
