Obituary

"To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the Heaven; A time to be born and a time to die." Ecclesiates 3:1-2

Today we celebrate a life well lived by a phenomenal 90 year old lady, Mrs. Tomasue Springs Crockett.  She was born in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Tom Springs and Viola Arnold Springs Joyner.  She attended the schools of Forsyth County, graduating from Carver High School, and received her nursing training from Winston-Salem State University and Forsyth Technical Community College.  Her chosen profession was that of a caregiver and nursing, having worked at NC Baptist Hospital and as a private duty nurse.

Mother Crockett was a loving, kind, giving, patient, compassionate, and extra ordinary mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend who always greeted you with a beautiful, dimpled smile.  She never ended a conversation without saying, "I love your more."

Mother Crockett was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church having joined at age 13 and attending faithfully until her health began to fail.  Over the years she served in various positions, but most notably was President of the Nurses Board, Secretary of the Busy Bee Club, and Lead Alto of the Senior Choir.  Her other affiliations in the community included being a member of Order of Eastern Stars Queens of Olympics Daughters of Isis, life-long member of NAACP, Winston-Salem Urban League, President of Bellview Civic League, volunteer with Winston-Salem Recreation Department, Boy Scouts of America, Boys & Girls Club of America, Belews Street Vicinity Olde Timers, Winston-Salem Senior Citizens Services, and an activist and civil rights loader for voting.

She was affectionately called Mama, Grandma, Sister, and Aunt Tomasue by her children, grands, brothers, sisters, many nieces and nephews.  She was the matriarch of her family, whom she loved dearly.  She helped her mother, affectionately known as "Big Mama", to organize the Arnold-Springs Family Reunion.  She strongly believed in her family praying and staying together. When not on the phone with a family member, she loved working crossword puzzles and watching tv: old westerns, old tv classics, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Family Feud.

On Wednesday, August 17, 2022 as predestined by God, Mother Crockett departed her earthly life to begin her Heavenly journey as our Lord and Savior called her home.  Prior to her transition, she praised, thanked God, and sang "It Is Well With My Soul."

Mother Crockett was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Crockett; and grandson, Carl Edward Swann, Jr.

Mother Crockett gave birth to a set of twins, a daughter, Avis Viola Crockett and a son, Aaron Thomas (LaTonya) Crockett, whom she loved dearly.  She also leaves to cherish her loving memories two brothers, Hermon B. (Elaine) and Harold (Mary); one sister, Jacqueline of Winston-Salem, NC; her grandsons, Germaine Swann, Leonard Hackney, Jr., Alvis Hackney, Christopher and Cedric Crockett; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; and very devoted nieces, Jennifer Springs, Fern Butler, Viola Green, Deborah Williams, Latrell Edwards, and Nicey Springs.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Russell Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Kalvin Edwards officiating.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1:00pm Wednesday at the Chapel.
