Tobias DeWayne McMahan "Toby" brightened this world in Winston-Salem, NC on April 22, 1965. He was the son of Felix and Mary Ruth McMahan both of whom are deceased. This light was extinguished on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at Forsyth Medical center.
Although Toby was born with Down's Syndrome, he defied all odds against him. The family was told at his birth he would only live to be two years old. When he passed that milestone they were told he would not walk nor would he ever talk. Those who knew Toby knows he defied that also. The happiest words in our family would become "Toby please shut up!" He never met a stranger and had a particular love for children. He was one of the first residents of Horizon's Residential Care Center. Toby out grew this care facility and entered the public school system. He completed his attendance at South Park High School in the spring of 1985.
He is survived by his brothers, Michael C. Smith of Winston-Salem, NC, Randy O. Davis (Bonnie) of Long Beach, CA, Waymon L. Smith of Fayetteville, NC, and his sister, Jessica F. McMahan of Winston-Salem, NC. Other survivors include his uncles, Lawrence Smith (Blondie) of Lexington, NC, George Sims (C.J.) of Virginia Beach, VA, and his aunts Nathalie S.
