Obituary

Mr. Thurmond Adolph Witherspoon was born August 8, 1936 in Winston Salem, NC to David and Plummie Witherspoon. He departed this life to take possession of his heavenly home on Thursday August 2, 2018.

He was a member of Hanes Memorial CME Church where he served faithfully until his health failed on the Trustee Board, Usher Board and Male Chorus.

"Spoon," as he was affectionately known to many, was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system and was a retired employee of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.  After retirement, he created a lawn care business, and for years maintained several lawns throughout the community until his health began to fail.  He was an avid lover of cars and took pride in detailing his vehicles and those of his loved ones.  His passion was singing, lawn care and saving for a "rainy" day.

"Spoon" was preceded in death by his parents, David and Plummie Witherspoon; two brothers, Willie Witherspoon and David Jr. Witherspoon; one sister, Ruth Witherspoon; and two brothers-in-law, Royal Abbitt and Robert Watts.

He leaves to cherish many loving and precious memories four daughters, Paula Blackwell (Ronnie) of Kernersville, NC, Robin Witherspoon of Lewisville, NC, Tonette Crowell (Wayne) of Kernersville, NC, and Karen Witherspoon of Lewisville, NC;  one son, Rodney Bess (Alice) of Troy, IL;  a devoted friend and former wife, Jacqueline Witherspoon Nunn; eight grandchildren, Jacques Grace (Kelly) of Symra GA, Paris Crowell-Washington (Chris) and Sandra Blackwell of the city, Wayne Crowell, Jr. of Greensboro, NC,  Tony Gorham of the city, Brittany W. Smith of Charlotte, NC, Shanika (Kevin) Candelora of Salisbury, NC,  and Tameka Blackwell of Kernersville, NC; fourteen great- grandchildren; four sisters, Virginia W. Abbitt, of Hyattsville, MD, Gwendolyn W. Watts,  Phyllis Witherspoon,  and Audrey M. Witherspoon all of the city; one brother, Nathan (Sandra) Witherspoon of Greensboro, NC; one sister-in-law, Deborah Witherspoon of the city; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
