Obituary

We are here to celebrate the legacy of Mr. Thurmond Burnard Goins. Affectionately known as "Pops", "Papa", and "T-Bone", Mr. Goins entered Heaven's Gates on February 19, 2023, surrounded by his three loving children.

Thurmond was born August 21, 1950 to Emma Lee Patterson and Levie Goins of Winston- Salem, NC. He attended Atkins High School and was a devoted Camel. He excelled in his studies. His hobbies included swimming, skating, and playing various sports. This is where he developed lifelong friendships. He was a dedicated lifeguard and a police officer at the Winston-Salem Police Department.

He attended Winston- Salem State University with dreams to become a Physical Education Teacher. However, he chose to interrupt his studies to lovingly care for his mother, Emma, who had fallen ill. It was during this time that he learned to cook many of his infamous dishes (pinto beans & ham hoc, ribs, porkchops). Throughout her sickness, he remained at her side attending to her every need.

Thurmond was a devoted husband, an amazing father, and an excellent grandfather. He was a stead- fast figure, a military spouse, and an inspiration to many. After the passing of his mother, Thurmond ventured his way into sales. He was an awesome car salesman. He worked at various car dealerships across the east coast. He was awarded several sales awards. In Augusta, GA, Thurmond had the privilege to be featured in a commercial for Bobby Jones Ford. This man could sell a fish water. That is how you know "the dealer makes the difference". Thurmond's keen fashion sense and smooth talking made him a successful clothing salesman as well. While in Alaska, Thurmond was a photographer with his own dark room. He enjoyed exploring the land, capturing the landscapes, and family memories through his camera lens.

"T-Bone", the life of the party, met his wife Sandra Laverne Evans in Winston-Salem, NC. They were married in 1979 in Augusta, GA. He was a military spouse (dedicated and supportive). He was the glue that helped to hold the family together. He was able to conquer every challenge that presented itself while being stationed all over the United States. His unselfishness was brought to the forefront again when his wife Dr. Sandra Laverne Goins (Retired Colonel) became ill. In 2018, she transitioned with Thurmond and family at her bedside.

Thurmond was preceded in death by his father, Levie Goins; his mother, Emma Lee Patterson; and his sister, Sherley Arnetta Goins. He leaves behind three children to cherish his memories. Thurmond Benard Goins (spouse: Janice Goins) of Canton, GA, Alyse Alexandrea Evans Goins of the home, and Thurmond De'ongelous Goins of Clayton, NC; Thurmond has four grandchildren, Amire Brooke Perry of Raleigh, NC, Cameron Alexander Christopher Goins of the home, De'Ongelous Dewayne Goins, and Lily Brooke Goins of Clayton, NC. In addition, Thurmond leaves behind several cousins, friends, special friends, and classmates. Thurmond would not want us to dwell his passing but, to celebrate his life.
