Mrs. Thomasina R. Hawkins, 92, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 31, 2023 at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 4, 1931 to the late Catherine Hill and Ivy Lee Rollins and raised by her step father, Willie B. Hill. She worked for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System for more than 40 years where she was affectionately known as "Mother Hawkins" to numerous students. She was loyal member of New Hope AME Zion Church in Lewisville, NC where she served as the President of the Missionary Society for more than 25 years, served on the Trustee Board, Usher Board, Kitchen Committee, Deaconess Board, Stewardess Board, a member of the Senior Choir, Lay Council President, Sunday School Teacher, Class Leader and the Mother of the Church. Thomasina started the first food bank in the Winston-Salem District. Mrs. Hawkins started the first Hawkins Family Reunion 56 years ago and the reunion is still going and the Partlow Family Reunion more than 40 years ago. Mrs. Hawkins started the Double Springs Memorial Gardens Annual Celebration which continues today.
Mrs. Hawkins was a long-time member of the Lewisville Civic Club, was a Board Member of the LCAP Program, Church Community Blood Drive, Secretary of the Lewisville Historical Society, Meals on Wheels Volunteer for 30 years, volunteered at the Samaritan Kitchen, and a member of the Mahalia Jackson Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Hawkins; one son, Ronald L. Hawkins, Sr.; two daughters, Wanda Fay Hawkins-Porter and Catherine Hawkins-Speller.
She is survived by: one son Willie Hawkins; two daughters, Tony and Constance Hawkins; two daughters-in-law, Teressa Hawkins and Virgie Hawkins; one son-in-law, George Porter. Mrs. Hawkins is also survived by one brother, Larry Kimbrough; one sister, Anna Partlow; eight grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Thursday, January 4, 2023 at Russell Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon Friday, January 5, 2024 at New Hope AME Zion Church with Pastor Dairl Scott officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope AME Zion Church Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12:00noon on Friday at the Church.
