Thomas Earl Ingram, a faithful servant, and loving family man, passed away on July 11, 2023. His life was marked by his commitment to his family, service to his community, his country, and above all, to his Lord. His faith took root at Center Grove Church where he was baptized on March 2016, igniting a hunger for the Word of God. He believed in God and wanted everyone to experience God's amazing love.
Thomas, fondly known as "Tom", was born October 15, 1949, in Newark, New Jersey by his predeceased parents, Thomas Earl Sr. and Marie Ingram. Raised, and educated in Newark, NJ among family and friends, Tom was the beloved family man, respected veteran, and proud father of two children, his son Mark and his only daughter Tomi, whom he affectionately called "Princess."
In 1976, Tom relocated to North Carolina where he met and married the beautiful love of his life, travel partner, faithful wife, and best friend, Doris whom he affectionally called "His Dee." They celebrated a blessed 41 years of marriage, and from this, added to his life were sons, Mark and Wesley.
Tom received a Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics from High Point University and a Master's in Liberal Arts and Studies from Wake Forest University. He served as a member of the High Point University Board of Trustees.
Tom's career was marked by an impressive blend of business acumen and strategic planning, leading to his retirement not once but twice. His first retirement came in 2004 after 16 years of service, a notable tenure as the Manager of Facilities at RJ Reynolds. His second stint was as the Director of Facilities, Planning & Construction at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, a position he held for 14 years.
In this role, Tom oversaw a myriad of functions, interacting with staff and faculty to develop facility plans, manage projects, and deliver architect services, construction, interior design, and administrative support. His substantial contributions to Wake Forest, particularly in the domain of medical facility construction, underpin his enduring legacy in engineering and design.
Prior to his role as Director, Tom had spent 5 years as a Project Manager at Piedmont Triad Research Park, further honing his considerable skills. Among his myriad achievements, Tom led the construction of the Richard H. Dean Biomedical Building. This state-of-the-art facility now serves as a bustling hub for scientists and preclinical researchers, offering spaces for wet labs, small- scale manufacturing, and fostering the work of the Biomedical Engineering (BME) department and the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM).
Such remarkable accomplishments solidify Tom's enduring legacy in the fields of engineering and design and stand as a testament to his visionary work, and significant impact on Wake Forest and the broader medical community. His profound influence will continue to inspire and pave the way for future advancements in biomedical research, healthcare facility development, and patient health.
Tom's dedication to service extended beyond his professional life. He served on multiple boards and contributed to various community organizations, from Brenner Children Hospital, the Arts Council of Winston Salem, Forsyth Technical Community College, Winston Salem Rescue Mission, and more. He was committed to the growth of youth and young adults.
Tom was a man of humble presence, admired not just for his professional accomplishments, but for his quiet strength and kindness. Tom's life and service brought him into contact with several notable figures including Lance Armstrong, Colin Powell, Laura Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Steve Wozniak, Chris Gardner, and Buzz Aldrin just to name a few. These connections, however, never altered his commitment to humility and service.
His humility and compassionate spirit were felt deeply by those who knew him, and these qualities illuminated every room he entered.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Doris M. Ingram; his children, Mark Ferguson (Kirsten), Mark Attucks (Niya), Princess Tomi Ingram, and Wesley Attucks; his siblings, Patricia (Patty) Graham, Tracy Ingram, and Robin Ingram; he was also a cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren; and a dear uncle to a host of nieces and nephews.
Thomas E. Ingram lived a life full of love, service, and accomplishments, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire and impact generations to come. His good works, humility, and love for his family and the advancement of others will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
