Obituary

Reverend Theodore Brandon was born on August 27, 1935 in Union, SC to the late JV Brandon and Aline Lipsey Brandon. He grew up the oldest of six children in Davidson, NC. He attended the Mecklenburg County Schools, where he was football player with Huntersville High School and a school bus driver for the local schools.

After graduating from high school in 1954, he moved to Winston-Salem, NC where we he went to work for the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. He retired from that position after 30 years of service.

In 1956 he married Maxine Sanders. This union produced three daughters: Cheryl Brandon Wells (Ralph), Lisa Brandon Johnson (Leo), and Apryl Brandon. After Maxine's death, Theodore married his current wife, Eva Sue Edwards, and became the step father to two adult children: Nathan Bryan and Stephanie Green (Maurice).

Rev. Brandon was a hardworking, responsible, and loving father. To ensure that his family had all their needs meet, he held two jobs for 18 years. He began the day at RJR, his main job, then went to his second job delivering medicine for a local drug store. Later he worked at RJR and ran his own floor cleaning service.

For over 50 years, Theodore Brandon was a faithful member of Union Chapel Baptist Church. When the church moved from the corner of Belo and Derry streets to the present location at 300 West 25 th Street, he helped locate the land for rebuilding. Once construction started, he visited the construction site daily to monitor the building process (November 8, 1976 – October 9, 1977). Later he was instrumental in building an addition to the church which included, an educational department, pastor's study, finance room, fellowship hall, and a new kitchen (July 27, 1986 – March 15, 1987). Over the years he served Union Chapel in several capacities including Trustee, Chairman of the Deacon Board (10 years), Co-Chairman of the Building Committee, Chairman of Pastoral Search Committee, Church Bus Driver, and Sunday School Teacher.

After receiving his call to ministry, Reverend Brandon preached his initial sermon on December 20, 1987. Later he attended Forsyth Technical Community College and Winston-Salem Bible College, where he received a B.A. Degree in Ministry. He was ordained by the Rowan Association on August 22, 1990.

Reverend Brandon was a man that didn't mind telling you the truth. If you asked him an honest question, you got an honest answer. He was a strong-willed and independent man who always followed his own mind, no matter what critics might think.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Brandon; his sisters, Josephine McKissick, Ruby B. Evans (Charlotte, NC), and Bessie Grissom (Statesville, NC); his brothers, James Brandon (Winston-Salem, NC), and Bobby Brandon (Statesville, NC); his aunt, Ester Lipsey Wilson (Greenville SC); his uncle, Arthur Lee Lipsey (Durham, NC); his children, Cheryl Brandon Wells (Dallas, TX), Lisa Brandon Johnson (Winston-Salem) and Apryl Brandon (Winston-Salem); eight grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and family.
