Thelma Barksdale Canty was born in W-S, NC on October 25, 1924. God saw fit to call her home on September 17, 2013 at the precious age of 88.

She was a faithful member of Hanes Memorial CME Church for over 60 years, where she served as the Usher Board President until she fell ill. Earlier in life, she was employed by Kimball Flower shop for many years before God called her to open her heart and home where she cared, loved, and fostered many children for over 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alma and Will Barksdale; husband, Thomas Canty; and two grandchildren, Tyrone and Camille.

Left to cherish her memories are three children, Lois Smith (Thomas), Crystal Canty (Tyrone), and Michael Canty (Jamie); ten grandchildren, Thomas, Jr., Michael of Atlanta, GA, Michele, Veronica, Shereka, Christopher, Xavier, Audianna, Adric, and Parker; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Guster Black; two honorary children, Patricia and Anthony; best friend, Lilamae Montgomery; devoted friends, Ms. Scott, Ms. Felder, and Betty Miller; and a host of many family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm Monday, September 23, 2013 at Hanes Memorial CME Church with Reverend Willie Mae Carson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1pm on Monday at the Church.
