Terry Wayne Smoot was born to the late Mr. Edward D. Smoot and Mrs. Catherine Pulliam Smoot in Salisbury NC, Rowan County. Wayne departed this life on Wednesday evening, June 23, 2021.
Terry Wayne attended Davie County High School where he played basketball and did track and field events.
Terry Wayne later went into the military to serve the United States Army 82nd Airborne. He was stationed in Fort Bragg of Fayetteville NC and the Panama Canal Zone Panama City, Panama. While in the military he took on the hobby of boxing, playing basketball and drove trucks and tankers. He served a total of two terms. During his six years of service, he received the Purple Heart and was later honorably discharged.
Terry Wayne relocated his family back to Winston-Salem, NC and began working at Salem Steel Plant. He attended Forsyth Technical Community College taking up Automotive Mechanics. He later grew closer to his late father-in-law Mr. Lester Patterson who would teach him to drive tractor trailers. Terry Wayne moved on and worked a number of years for numerous trucking companies from the former EG Forest to McLean Trucking Company and then retired to assist with caring for his first grandchild. Terry Wayne also studied law for a short duration and worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the former Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Convalescent Center located on first street and Homestead Hills on Homestead Club Drive of Winston-Salem, N.C.
Terry Wayne or Big Smoot as he was known in the community shared many precious moments with people from every walk of life and all over the world. He enjoyed motorcycle rides on his Harley Davidson his younger years. He was passionate about his vehicles. His motto was, "If you take care of your vehicles, they will take care of you" and it showed with how well kept and clean his vehicles were. Terry Wayne was always said to be the cleanest and sharpest man known. He loved cookouts, parties, family fun and where he spent most of his time volunteering to help those in need at the Winston-Salem Salvation Armies, Rescue Missions, Soup Kitchens cooking his famous scrambled eggs and more. He loved people, shooting pool, and fishing. His past time was watching cowboy movies and rivaling with his beloved God daughter, Ronica over football. He loved his family and he had no regrets in life.
Terry Wayne was preceded in death by three half siblings, Sherry Smoot, Sharon Etchison, and Carolyn Fisher, all of Mocksville NC.
Terry Wayne leaves behind to cherish his life legacy daughter, Tuajuana LaToya (Toya) Smoot-Hairston; three granddaughters, Kayla N. Smoot (Ladybug), She'mira N. Smoot-Hairston (Milkyway) and Niah S. Smoot-Hairston (New-new); Step-son, Bracey Shamar Hodges of Winston-Salem, NC; Siblings of Winston-Salem, N.C. Thomas Smoot, William Smoot (Linda), Kenneth Smoot (Kim) of Walkertown, NC, Leslie McLauren (Curtis) of Winston-Salem, NC; Half-Siblings, Ricky Smoot, Diane McLeland, Rhonda Grant, Tirena Anderson and Dennis Smoot all of Mocksville, NC; a loving and devoted God daughter, Ronica S. McPhee (Aubrey) and their three children of Acworth, GA; two devoted friends, Mr. Robert Oakes (Debra) of Winston-Salem, NC and Mr. Al Cross (Toni); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other close community, military and extended friends and family.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 6:00pm Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Russell Funeral Home.
Private funeral services will be held Friday, July 2, 2021. Interment will follow in Salisbury National Cemetery.
