Sylvine Acker Hardy, 81, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 11, 2007 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Hardy was born April 6, 1926 in Pickens, SC to Herman L. and Florence K. Acker. She was educated in the Pickens County and was married to Edd Hardy, Jr.
Sylvine was multi-talented. She continued her education at ESR Adult Classes and was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Mrs. Hardy was a beautician for a number of years. She was quite a decorator and knew just the herbs necessary to cure most illnesses- what a lady!
"Mama Hardy" as she was called by her church family, was a faithful member and supporter of Friendship Baptist Church and Redeemed Missionary Baptist Church until her health declined. She served on the Pastor's Aide, the Willing Workers Clubs, and sang on the Spiritual Choir. For many years, she was a captain of the annual Calendar Teas. In 1982 she was crowned Miss Friendship.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; two children, Edd Hardy, III. and Dorothy Hardy; two brothers, Ezell and Theodore Acker; and one sister, Sarah Acker Tucker.
She leaves to cherish her memories seven daughters, Barbara Simmons, Belinda and Brenda Hardy, Betty Galloway, Sylvine "Diane" Hardy (James) Werts, and Cynthia (George) Crews all of Winston-Salem, NC and Evelyn Freeman of Upper Marlboro, MD; five sons, David, Frederick, Clifford and Donald Hardy all of Winston-Salem, NC and James Hardy of Oconne, SC; one sister, Effie (Henrey) Lee of Piedmont, SC; five brothers, L.D. (Mamie) Acker of Winston-Salem, NC, William (Jannie) Acker of Pendleton, SC, James (Carolyn) Acker of Greenville, SC, Gene (Dorothy) Acker of Anderson, SC and Roy (Hilda) Rector of Winston-Salem, NC; two sisters-in-law, Estell Wiley of Kannapolis, NC and Ozella Acker of Greenville, NC; 50 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, adopted children, and many other relatives and friends.
Mama Hardy was well-noted for her classy outfits and big, beautiful hats. On the front of her Lincoln Continental was "Meet Me at Church on Sunday". Her motto was in the form or a song, "Jesus Gives Me All of My Medicine, In My Room". Yes, what a lady!
Homegoing services will be held at 1pm Saturday, August 18, 2007 from the Friendship Baptist Church with Pastor Stacy Frazier, Host Pastor and Pastor Gary Walker officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from noon until 1pm on Saturday at the Church.
