Obituary

Sylvia Ann Carter Davidson, age 67, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones on March 28, 2025. Sylvia was born on September 7, 1957 in Winston-Salem, NC, to the late Carroll Carter and Mary Jeffries Carter. Sylvia was last married to the late Lester Davidson, III, until his death on October 25, 2023, living in the Mallard Lakes Community of Winston-Salem.

Sylvia is survived by her three children, Romaro Carter, Tiffany Brooks and Richard Brooks, Jr. (Siobhan); her three grandchildren, Simaria Carter, Zion Shorter and Aspen Carter; her great grandchild, Za'Rylan Lemons; her mother, Mary Jeffries Carter; her six sisters, Siberia Hood, Carolyn Butler (Norman), Minister Nawatha Carter, Iris Moss (Patrick, Sr.), Joyce Carter and Cheryl Timbers (George) ; her four children-in-love, Lester Smith Jr., Christopher Caldwell (Stephanie), Sheleah Davidson (Ohnre), and Mary Green (Lewis III); her four sisters-in-law, Brenda Huff, Pamela Jordan, Regina Johnson, and Renee Johnson (Todd); her four childhood best friends, Sharon Cunningham, Linda Davis, Sandra Robinson and Patricia Shore (Michael); her nine nieces and nephews, Chris Coleman (Sabrina), Anthony Coleman (Dana), Lanicia Carter, Joy Coleman, Minister David J. Coleman, Carlos Carter, Jaina Reynolds, Telesa Hester (James), and Patrick Moss, Jr.; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her father, Carroll Carter; her brother-in-law, Tommy Hood, Sr.; and her nephew, Tommy Hood, Jr.

Sylvia was a fearless, charismatic, charming, fun loving, courageous, 'life of the party' kind of woman. To know her was to absolutely love her. Sylvia grew up in Winston-Salem, NC. She went to Diggs Elementary School, Anderson Jr. High School and Parkland High School where she was well known for her competitiveness and her athleticism. Sylvia graduated from HBCU Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC, in 1979 where she was proud to be a Ram Cheerleader.  After college, Sylvia went to work for the US Military Department of Defense where she was an Exercise Physiologist, opening several Fitness Centers and keeping the military in shape for many years, with multiple duty stations including: Hickam AFB in Hawaii, Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan, Vint Hill Farms Station Military Installation in Warrenton, VA, Bolling AFB in Washington, DC and Joint Base Andrews AFB in Camp Springs, MD where she retired after 33 years of service. After Sylvia retired, she moved back home to Winston-Salem where she was again a member of First Waughtown Baptist Church, under Doctor Dennis Bishop.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Thursday, April 3, 2025 at Russell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Friday, April 4, 2025 at First Waughtown Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown, NC. The family visitation will be held from 10:30am until 11:00am on Friday at the Church.
