Obituary

Sitirian "Ty" Hawkins Elcock was born to Grant Hawkins, Sr. (Naval Officer turned Pastor) and Charlene Hawkins (Registered Nurse) on September 25, 1956 in San Antonio, Texas. The loving mother, devoted wife, lover of nature, and Daughter of the King went home to be with the Lord on May 1, 2025 at the age of 68 years old. She was the youngest of three siblings (Jimmy Hawkins and Grant Hawkins, Jr.) and the only girl. She was bright and energetic as a young woman who lit up the halls of Sam Houston High School. She was studious in school, while developing a deep love for science, the art of communicating through dance and also sports like cheerleading, and volleyball.

She carried an innate desire to teach and went to Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Virginia to obtain her Bachelors in Biology Education with a minor in Spanish. She graduated from college in 1978 and moved to Winston Salem, North Carolina to teach AP Biology and Marine Biology at the Career Center. Her love for dance remained an anchor in her life and she studied Ballet, Tap, Modern/Contemporary, and African dance. She joined a local African dance troupe in Winston Salem called Otesha (now called Otesha Creative Arts) and performed with them throughout the city.

It was on a day she was practicing in the park where she met her husband, William J. Elcock and they were married on June 23, 1984. She gave birth to a daughter, Domenice Barnes on April 16, 1990. Over the years, she could always be found serving in church, serving her family, and uplifting her community through the arts. She was a mighty prayer warrior and advocate for those around her. She was not one to sugar coat the truth, but she spoke with love being the motivation of all her words and actions.

In 2000, Sitirian along with her husband and daughter moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where she began teaching at Vance High School (now known as Julius L. Chambers High School).

They became members of Victory Christian Center in 2001. In her time there, she lent her gifts and talents in continuing to develop the dance ministry. She also choreographed many pieces that were performed on special Sundays.

She would go on to start her dream by creating Ojah Dance Ministry & Christian School and travel to different churches in the surrounding area. She would assist churches with developing their own dance ministry, while teaching and mentoring dancers in each place she went. She also loved volunteering at the Women's Homeless Shelter at Church in the City, where she continued to show the love of God to everyone she came in contact with.

Sitirian was blessed with the gift of nurturing plants. Those who knew her could tell she created a safe space for herself in her garden. It was the process of watching something grow and become fruitful. Growing plants was the way she communed with the Lord as well. She spent Saturday mornings outdoors, reading the Bible and praying before tending to her plants. It was where she felt the most at peace. She brought that love and passion into volunteering during the time VCC created a community garden.

She eventually retired from teaching in 2015 after giving 30+ years to the profession and was preparing to open a physical location for her own dance studio when she was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Ty was a great woman of faith and stood on God's Word no matter what highs or lows she experienced. She held fast to the belief that God is sovereign and that His grace was sufficient for every moment she's ever faced.

Sitirian Domenice Hawkins Elcock was preceded by her parents, Grant Hawkins, Sr. and Charlene Hawkins.

She is survived by her husband, William J. Elcock; her daughter, Domenice Barnes; and extended family that she loved as her own.
