Obituary

Mrs. Shirley Howard Scales, affectionately known as "Shorty", went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. Shirley was born in Darlington, SC to Mrs. Hattie S. Howard and the late Jesse D. Howard.
Mrs. Scales was a 1970 graduate of Atkins High School. Shirley was beautiful inside and out. She attended Modeling School in Silver Springs, MD for 2 years. She returned to Winston-Salem and was employed by RJ Reynolds for 38 years until her death. Shirley loved to be working all the time and she loved what she did. She was very outgoing and loveable. Shirley believed in helping family, friends, and people in need. She was also a First Responder in Emergency and worked on the United Way Committee and Campaign for several charities and organizations. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Mrs. Scales was preceded in death by her father; and her sister, Marcella Ann Howard.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memories her husband, James Scales; her mother, Hattie Howard; three sisters, Pricilla Cunningham, Mary and Jessie Howard; a step-daughter, Mitzi (Robert) Scales Howell; mother-in-law, Lois Hilliard Scales; brothers-in-law, Anthony and Donald (Barbara) Scales all of Winston-Salem, NC, Leon (Arnetta) Scales of Washington, DC; grandchildren, Robert Hall of Winston-Salem, NC, Andrea and Jeremiah Scales of Greensboro, NC; a special nephew, Robert Howard of Winston-Salem, NC; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30am Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. John Mendez officiating. Interment will follow in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC. The family visitation will be held from 11am until 11:30am on Tuesday at the Church.
