It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved Shepherd Johnson at the age of 78. Shepherd was born on July 10, 1946, in North Carolina to Cora Miller and Harmey S. Hyatt. He departed this life on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
Shepherd attended Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and graduated from Atkins High School. After high school, he joined the United States Navy, proudly serving his country. Following his service, Shepherd returned home, where he worked and actively participated in local ministries. He was a devoted member of Rising Ebenezer Baptist Church and attended regularly until his health began to decline.
Shepherd was preceded in death by his parents, Cora Miller and Harmey Hyatt; his brothers, Robert Lee Johnson and Albert Johnson; his sister, Pamela Hyatt; and his son, Cedrick Johnson.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Judy Cameron Johnson; his two daughters, Colleen Gambrell-Hyman (William) and Alisha Johnson; his son, Jalen Cameron (Bianca); his sisters, Nancy Hyatt, Virgie Hampton (Ralph), Shelia Miller, and Sandra Miller Evans (Walter); his grandchildren, Jomar Miller, Wakeisha Carethers, Jasmine Gambrell, Savanna Johnson, Mikayla Cannon, Kelsey Hamilton, and Nova Cameron; his great-grandchildren, Kaila Carethers, Keily Carethers, Kennedy Sanders, and Meghan Kelly; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to his caregiver, Tia Sides. She was more than just a caregiver; she gave her time, patience, and love, becoming a dear friend to our father.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at Russell Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Phillips Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at 1:30pm in Salisbury National Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 10:00am until 11:00am on Wednesday at the Church.
