Obituary

Sheila Renee Brown, affectionately known as “Miss Brown,” peacefully went home to be with the Lord on August 2, 2026. She was born on April 20, 1961, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Elmer Brown Sr. and Mozelle (Gray) Johnson. She was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who dedicated her life to serving and helping others.

Miss Brown attended Parkland High School and graduated from Irvin High School in El Paso, Texas. She later pursued a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Jones College, an Associate of Arts from Florida Community College, and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Liberty University. Throughout her career, she worked in government, customer service, insurance, banking, workers’ compensation, education, and sales. She was known for her compassion, determination, and genuine desire to help others.

Miss Brown was a devoted and enthusiastic believer in Jesus Christ. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she was a member of First Waughtown Baptist Church, where she faithfully served on the Usher Board, New Convert and New Member Ministry, the Homecoming Committee, and participated in Sunday School. She also taught a Sunday School class, sharing her faith, wisdom, and love for others with those around her.

She had a special love for children and was passionate about making a difference in their lives. She helped establish the Winston-Salem Tiny Deacons AAU football team, where she taught children not only about sports, but also discipline, responsibility, character, and believing in themselves. Miss Brown also volunteered on the NC AAU Tackle Football State Board, the Mid-State Youth Football and Cheer League and Boy Scouts of America. She was a mentor and source of guidance to many children and families in her community and neighborhood.

Washington, D.C. held a special place in her heart and became her second home, where she enjoyed good food (especially crab legs), good times, and the company of her dear friends “Aunt” Leunice Staton, Ave Darlene Broadie, and Tanya Brown, whom she loved dearly.

Miss Brown dreamed of becoming a philanthropist and entrepreneur. She hoped to manage rental properties, promote homeownership, create family housing through a nonprofit organization, and help those experiencing homelessness. Her greatest desire was to be a blessing to others, and she lived that purpose through her kindness, generosity, and willingness to help those in need.

She was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Brown Sr.; stepfather, Victor “Kim” Johnson; siblings, Jacqueline Denise Brown, Arnethea Karen Brown, and Elmer Brown Jr.; daughter, Chandra Teresa Brown; and her aunt, Ruby Brown Lyons.

She leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Mozelle Johnson (“Big Mama”); sons, Jermaine Middleton, Jeremy Brown, and Joshua Brown; grandchildren, Imani Brown, James Brown, Nino Brown, and Jermaine Middleton Jr.; brother, Jzonn Cureton, nieces and nephews, Monique Steele, Randy Brown, and Jada Pankey; aunts, Mamie Brown Young, Pearlie Brown, and Mary Alice Roberts; special cousin, Cori Brown; stepmother, Roberta Brown; stepchildren, Tonya Nash and Vincent Middleton; granddaughter, Christina Nash; and a host of cousins, extended family, friends, former students, coworkers, and others whose lives she touched.

Miss Brown will be remembered for her love of family, her compassion for children, her generosity, and the many lives she impacted. Her love, lessons, and legacy will continue through the people she cared for and the community she served. Her work on earth may be finished, but her legacy has only begun.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, August 22, 2026 at First Waughtown Baptist Church. The family visitation will be held from 10:30am until 11:00am on Saturday at the Church.
