Obituary

On Sunday, November 21, 2021, God summoned the soul of Shadrach Anthony Golden to rest from his weary health issues on earth.  He is now peacefully resting in the arms of Heavenly Father…..

My beloved Shadrach Golden was born on September 15, 1940 in Charlotte, NC to his late biological mother, Isabelle Kinard of Hendersonville, NC and was richly blessed with an adopted mother, Annie Golden of Charlotte, NC.

At an early age, Shadrach received a religious foundation and was taught to follow God with all his heart and joined the Seventh Street Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC.  After his marriage to his new bride, Eleanor Dunlap Golden in 1971, he was baptized and joined the First Baptist Church West in Charlotte so that they would share the religious experience together.  The couple moved to Maryland and became members of the Gillis Memorial CC Church in Baltimore still remaining together as a family.  He loved and fellowshipped with the members and was involved with the men of the church and was chairman for Men's Day for several years and volunteered to assist in any area needed. Recently in 2019, they returned to Winston-Salem and renewed their membership wit the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in which they married.

He attended the public schools of Charlotte, NC as an elementary student, attended Lincoln Academy in Gastonia as a middle school student, and graduated from West Charlotte High School in Charlotte, NC.  He attended Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte as a political science student.  He had a special talent with a melodious tenor voice and was a member of the university choir.  Resulting from the rich experience of the college choir, he was accepted as a member of the professional Charlotte Oratorical Singers performing at Owens Auditorium.

Mr. Golden's career consisted of an insurance agent with Winston Mutual, regional photographer for NC, and regional salesman for Proctor and Gamble.  After retiring, he decided to become a long distant truck driver with Star Incorporated and Eleanor sometimes traveled with him during her summer vacation, still together as a loving couple.

His hobbies consisted of photographer and local fishing, charter fishing, and proudly joined and became a captain with the Pleasant Yacht Club in Sparrows Point, MD.  The captains involved their wives as First Mates and cruised to Virginia, other parts of Maryland, and with other yacht clubs.

Shadrach was affectionately called "Shad" by man and Eleanor and some referred to him as her "Knight in Shining Golden Armor" because he was so protective and caring of her.  He had a romantic side to him and when he met Eleanor at a floral shop on December 20, 1969 he requested to meet her mother the next day who was in Winston-Salem.  Still deeply in love, they renewed their 30 th Wedding Anniversary in Jamaica and were blessed to celebrate their 50 th Wedding Anniversary on March 27, 2021 in Myrtle Beach, which was one of their favorite vacation places.

Mr. Golden was preceded in death by his mothers, Isabelle Kinard and Annie Golden; brother, Arthur Barber; sisters, Hattie James and Thomasina Murphy; nephews, Charles Haynes, Sr., James Haynes, Jr., Arthur Barber, and Aaron Barber; and nieces, Lelia Haynes and Mildred Buckner Holland.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Eleanor Dunlap Golden; sister, Annie Haynes; brother, Herbert Kinard; nephews, Ronald Barber, Robert Haynes, Sr., Richard Haynes, Donald Barber, Calvin Barber, Jermaine Barber, and Tony Barber; nieces, Mary Haynes, Cynthia McKnight, Vivian Brown, Joyce Hernandez, Deborah Barber, and Pamela Barber; and a host of great-nephews and great-nieces within the Haynes and Barber families.  The Golden's were not blessed with children through birth, but loved and embraced their two Godsons, Tatum Wiggins and Joshua Reavis and the younger family members.

In life, God has ordered special people to enter your lives to fill you with additional love.  The Dunlap/Martin family accepted Shadrach with open arms as an additional son. Then, we moved to Maryland and God placed Charles and Mildred Alston of Aberdeen, Maryland to embrace us as a member of their family and this friendship has lasted for over forty years.

Thanks be to God for giving us the victory of salvation, love, grace, and mercy!!!

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Friday, December 3, 2021 at Russell Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church with Bishop Sherwood T. Davis, Sr. officiating.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
