Selmon Green Small, affectionately known as "Stanky," was born on September 26, 1947, to the late Mae Frances Green and Wesley Small and was lovingly reared by the late Woodrow and Catherine Johnson. He peacefully departed this life surrounded by family on July 9, 2026, at Trellis Supportive Care.

Selmon never met a stranger. His warm smile, infectious sense of humor, and genuine love for family made him unforgettable to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He embraced life with a joyful spirit, enjoyed being in the company of family and friends, loved sharing a good meal, and was well known for his sweet tooth. His kindness, laughter, and easygoing nature left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.

Affectionately known as "Stanky," Selmon's cherished nickname was lovingly given to him by his mother, who admired Major League Baseball player Eddie Stanky. What began as a mother's tribute became a lifelong expression of love and identity, and to those who knew him best, he was simply "Stanky." A proud New Yorker, Selmon remained a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Knicks, faithfully cheering on his favorite teams throughout his life.

Born in New York City, Selmon always held a special place in his heart for his hometown and the many memories it gave him. He attended Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and later returned to New York, where he worked at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. In his later years, he returned to North Carolina, where he treasured spending time with family and friends. One of his greatest joys was worshipping at Macedonia Worship Center, where he faithfully attended Sunday morning services and found comfort in his church family.

Selmon was preceded in death by his brothers, Nathaniel Small, and Wesley Small; his sisters, Roberta Lewis, Frances Louvenia Green, Margaree Smith, Vandelia Quick, and Cathy Hunt.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory six loving children, Donnell Driver of Brooklyn, New York, Jerome (Sodonnie) Warren of San Antonio, Florida, Selvey Stillman of Kingstree, South Carolina, Stedra Stillman of Jacksonville, Florida, Brett Green of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Shante Jackson of Greensboro, North Carolina; a host of beloved grandchildren; four devoted brothers, Charles Green, Clarence Green, Woodrow (Alice) Johnson, Jr., and Elston Johnson; four loving sisters, Denise Green, Neba Green, Vickie Johnson Hicks, and Deboria May; one sister-in-law, Lacine Small; his beloved nephew, Darryl Green; his beloved niece, Robin Green; his special cousins, Donald and Odessa Scales- with whom he shared countless laughs and unforgettable memories; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, church family, and friends who will miss him dearly.

From the streets of New York City to the loving embrace of family in North Carolina, Selmon "Stanky" Small lived a life marked by laughter, resilience, and love. Though his earthly journey has ended, his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. His warm smile, joyful spirit, and the memories he created will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Memorial services will be held at 3:30pm Friday, July 24, 2026 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. The family visitation will be held from 3:00pm until 3:30pm on Friday at the Chapel.

The family extends heartfelt appreciation to everyone who surrounded Selmon with love and care throughout his journey. A special thank you is extended to his devoted sister, Denise Green, who lovingly ensured his needs were met by running errands, accompanying him to appointments, and making important decisions on his behalf when he was no longer able. The family also expresses sincere gratitude to his brother, Clarence Green, whose unwavering support, compassion, and steadfast presence were a constant source of strength. Your selfless acts of love will forever be remembered and deeply appreciated.
