Savannah Craighead Thomas, 89, was born in Henry County, VA on April 3, 1932 to the late Sylvester and Mary Jane Spencer Craighead. She passed away on April 4, 2021.
Savannah graduated from Mary Potter Academy in Oxford, NC in 1950 and earned her bachelor's degree from North Carolina College in 1954, where she was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She began her teaching career with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System in 1954 and taught until her retirement in 1987.
In addition to her parents, Savannah was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John Roi Thomas, Sr. in 2014.
Savannah leaves to cherish her memories her son, John Roi Thomas, Jr. of Brevard, NC; stepdaughter, Gwendolyn Robinson (Larry) of Greensboro, NC; three sisters, Yvonne Johnson of Cary, NC, Delores Ford (Harry) of Nashville, TN, and Elizabeth Carraway of Detroit, MI; special nephews and nieces, James Johnson, Jr. of Cary, NC and Marquesa Johnson-Whitley (Ulas), Marlas Whitley and Jamison Whitley of Raleigh, NC; lifelong friend, Hazel Harvey of Winston-Salem, NC; special friends, J.D. and Gina Hendrix of Winston-Salem, NC and Susan Sadowski of Gettysburg, PA; and a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm-6:00pm Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Russell Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday, April 8, 2021 in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:30 am until 12:00 noon on Thursday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
