Obituary

Saundra Pearl Peterson was born on May 11, 1953, in Davidson County, Nashville, Tennessee. She was the first born of four children of  Dr. Abraham Frederick Peterson, Jr. and Dr. Harriette Annetta Derrick Peterson. She was preceded in death by her parents. Saundra was affectionately called, Sandy, by her family. She and her siblings were raised in a Christian home. At an early age Saundra was baptized at Spruce Street Baptist Church in Nashville, TN. In recent years Saundra became an active member of Saint James Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, NC where she served as a Deacon, a member of the multimedia committee, and as a Trustee.

Saundra attended Davidson County, Tennessee Public Schools. She graduated from Maplewood High School in 1971 with honors. As a member of the Maplewood High School's Spanish Club, she traveled to England, France, Spain and Italy. Saundra chose to attend Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. While attending Spelman, she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Saundra earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Spanish in 1975. As a Spanish major and Merrill Scholar Saundra spent a year studying abroad in Spain during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. After graduating from Spelman College in 1975 Saundra returned to Nashville, Tennessee for graduate school at Peabody College where she got her master's degree in library science. She moved to Greensboro, NC and accepted a job as a librarian at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 1991. Saundra moved to North Carolina to be closer to her sister Becky Jo and family.

One of Saundra's favorite activities was to dress up to commemorate various occasions and holidays. Saundra loved to drive. Saundra's zest for life was infectious to those who had an opportunity to make her acquaintance. She was a professional sports enthusiast. Saundra was a lover of music. She was a collector of books. She enjoyed being outdoors. Her gardening expertise was acknowledged by the blue ribbons she won, competing in "Flower Shows" at the County and State levels.

Saundra leaves to cherish her memory, her sisters, Cheryl Lynn Peterson and Becky Jo (Donald) Buie; brother, Abraham F. Peterson, III; niece, Lauren (Matthew) Cramer; great nephew, Matthew K.C. Cramer, Jr.; great niece, Vivian D.B. Cramer; cousins, Fred (Sondra) Derrick, III, Dennis (Sandra) Derrick, Christopher Derrick, Jennifer Derrick, Billie Derrick, Jr., Darnell Derrick, Ryan Derrick, Meroy (James) Hudson, Ronna Charles, Kem (Richard) Wiggins Hammonds, Tashi D. Williams, Gordon (Jackie) Pledge, Craig Pledge, Courtney Pledge, Roderick Pledge, Shannon Pledge, Kesha Pledge, Eugene G. Peterson, Jr., Evelena Peterson, Lucsen Saintil Jr., Frederick Peterson, Benjamin Peterson, and Brian F. Peterson; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 12:00pm Monday, May 12, 2025 at Saint James Presbyterian Church, 820 Ross Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27406. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12:00pm on Monday at the Church.
