Mrs. Sarah Lee Singletary, 75, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, was born on January 7, 1940 to the late Harmon Cooper Sr. and the late Mary (Honey) McCutchen Cooper. Our dear Lord called her home on Tuesday, February 24, 2015.
Born and raised in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, she was educated in Williamsburg County Schools. She grew up as an active member of St. Mark's AME church in Hemingway, South Carolina, where she found and accepted Christ at an early age.
Mrs. Singletary moved to Winston-Salem, NC in the late 1950s. On January 5, 1959, she married the love of her life, Joseph Singletary. They joined and became active members of Second New Bethel Baptist Church. She would go on to become an active member of Beulah Baptist Church and then later joined First Waughtown Baptist Church where she has been a devoted member for more than 40 years until her passing. She was a woman of strong faith and served as a prayer warrior for all that she knew.
Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Singletary also spent time working as a childcare provider for working mothers, and providing home, hotel and office park cleaning services. She had a passion for gardening, sewing, cooking and entertaining family and friends during the holidays. She had an energetic, jovial and fun loving spirit, never met a stranger, and received special joy from visits with children, grandchildren, family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Singletary; one sister, Minnie Cooper; and two brothers, James (Ida Mae) Cooper, and Willie Cooper.
Known to many as "mom" or "mother", she leaves to cherish most precious and loving memories, her children, Emma (Joe) Battle, Henry Singletary, Angela (Antonio) Hicks, Beverly (Donnie) Hilliard, and Jennifer (Bryant) Stewart; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Ruth (Elijar) McCullough; five brothers, Joe Cooper, Melvin Cooper, Harmon (Jannie) Cooper, Jr., David (Ernestine) Cooper, and Sam (Ruth) Cooper; sister-in-law, Ida Mae Cooper, and a host of other special relatives and friends.
Homegoing services will be held at 12noon Saturday, February 28,2015 at First Waughtown Baptist Church, 838 Moravia St. W-S, NC. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11am until 12noon on Saturday at the Church.
