Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Dillard Speight was born December 16, 1929 and passed away January 24, 2017. "Mother Speight" as she was affectionately called, was a 1948 graduate of Atkins High School. She attended Southern Christian Institute and was an active, lifetime member of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church where she was a founder of the Pastors Aide. She was a musician and the manager at the GCAVV bookstore. She was a member of the Piedmont Tri-State Convention Board, Christian Women's Fellowship, Past-President of the Skyland Senior Club, and a very active volunteer within her community.
In addition to her parents and sister; she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth D. Speight.
Left to cherish her memories are her son, Dennis James Speight; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Mrs. Hazel Dillard Black was born January 4, 1934 and passed away January 22, 2017. She was a 1952 graduate of Atkins High School, attended Harlem School of Nursing, Winston Salem Teachers College, and Shaw Divinity School. She was a retired x-ray diagnostic technician, a substitute teacher within the WSFCS system, and an active member of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. She was affiliated with many organizations including being a member of the Order of Eastern Stars, Past President of Skyland Senior Club, Youth Leader- Disciples of Christ Organization, Vice Chairman of the Board at Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship, Mother of the Church-Cornerstone Tabernacle, Christmount Retreat Leader, an officer in the Piedmont Tri-State Convention of the Disciples of Christ Church organization, and created the CYG at GCACC.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Williard K. Black; and two days after her passing her sister, Sarah Dillard Speight passed away.
Left to cherish her memories are her children, Stephen, Dennis, Latonya, Willard, and Daphne; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Duel funeral services for Sarah Speight and Hazel Black will be held at 11:00am Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Greater Church, 5095 Lansing Drive W-S, NC with Bishop Sheldon McCarter officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 10:00am until 11:00am on Saturday at the Church.
