Mr. Sam Dixon, Jr., 82, of 1931 Kentucky Ave. departed this life on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at home with his loved ones by his side.
He was born on June 27, 1929 in Chesterfield, SC to the late Sam Dixon and Annie Hillian Dixon. With the joining of these two families their children totaled 26, who all preceded him in death.
Sam was converted at an early age and joined Drucilla AME Zion Church in Chesterfield, SC.
He married Floretta McFarlin and to this union four children were born. Sam and his family moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1958. He later joined and was baptized at St. Stephens Baptist Church. He worked for Hanes Dye and Finishing Company for 30 plus years until he retired. Sam loved to work in his garden until his health failed. He gave freely his yielding to his family and friends.
He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Linda D. Lampkin; and grandson, Joe L. Dixon, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Samuel L. Dixon and Joe Larry Dixon (Cynthia) of Winston-Salem, NC; and daughter, Lilly Arlene Dixon-Moorer (Arthur) of Sacramento, CA; a devoted nephew, John A. Malloy (Geraldine) and family of Chesterfield, SC; eleven grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; his former wife, Floretta Gregory of Sacramento, CA; devoted friends, Mae and Mayo Reaves, Eric Boston, Sherry Wigfall of Winston-Salem, NC; and a very special friend, Savannah Mitchell and family of Winston-Salem, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Friday, October 21, 2011 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Charles Leak officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1pm on Friday at the funeral home.
