Mrs. Sadie Mae Gilliam West, 87, of 1426 N. Cameron Avenue, Winston-Salem, NC was born November 28, 1922 to the late William and Florence Gilliam. She departed this life on January 8, 2010 at the KBR Hospice Home.
She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem and a 1940 graduate of Atkins High School. She was a former Nursing Assistant at Kate Bitting and Forsyth Memorial Hospitals.
She was a Gold Star member of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church and served on the Willing Workers Club. She was a member of the (O.E.S.) Queens of Olympic Chapter # 620.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo R. West, Jr.; one son, James L. West; two sisters, Ruth Long and Sarah Smith; and four brothers, Hampton, Milton, Robert, and James Gilliam.
She leaves to cherish her memories; one son, David (Beverly) West of Durham, NC; three daughters, Doris (Fred) Davis of Kernersville, NC, Gwen McCoy and Patricia Johnson, both of Winston-Salem; one brother, Rev. Reuben (Anita) Gilliam; two sisters, Mamie P. Gilliam and Dorothy Aikens all of Winston-Salem, 15 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, four great- great grandchildren; god-daughters, Cornelius Gilmore and Myra Toribio; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of KBR Hospice Home for their kindness shown during our difficult time.
Funeral services will be held at 12Noon Tuesday, January 12, 2010 from Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church with Bishop Sherwood Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:00AM until 12Noon on Tuesday at the church.
