Surrounded by his loving wife and children, Rufus V. Wilborne, also known as "Lil Bro", went to be with the Lord on March 21, 2014 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Rufus attended Paisley High School and completed his education in the United States Army. While in the Army, he served with distinction in the 359 th Transportation Company during the Vietnam War. In 1968, he received an Army Commendation Medal for heroism. Using his experience in the Army, he began a long career in commercial trucking. In 1991, starting with one truck and trailer, he founded R.V. Wilborne Trucking, a family business that quickly grew into one of the largest minority carriers in the state of North Carolina. As a man devoted to his community, he was a member of Bivouac Lodge #503, the American Legion Post 128, and the Carolina Cruisers Motorcycle Club. He was also a proud supporter of the Boston Roundup.
Rufus was preceded in death by his parents, J'Van Wilborn and Evelyn Washington; his loving sister, Hilda Dendy; one brother, Wayland Wilborn; and his baby daughter, Candra Chey Wilborne.
He leaves to cherish loving memories a devoted wife of 26 years, Rebecca Davis Wilborne of the home; one son, Jamal D. Wilborne, Sr. (Trenece) of Winston-Salem; three daughters, DeeDee McCoy Foster (Michael) and Robin Carpenter Liles (Herbert) both all of Winston-Salem, and Chani N. Wilborne of Greer, SC; two grandchildren, Jamal D. Wilborne, Jr. and Diamond Carpenter-Valentine of the city; two brothers, J'Van Wilborn, Jr. of Mebane, NC and Cedric Wilborn (Audrey) of Winston-Salem; a devoted brother-in-law, Robert Dendy of Winston-Salem; special cousin, Lester "Cuz" McCollum; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Thursday, March 27, 2014 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Edith Davis officiating and Rev. Anthony Davis eulogist. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1pm on Thursday at the Chapel.
