Obituary

Ronald Kilgore, Sr., a cherished figure in Winston-Salem, NC, known for his kindness and his remarkable talents as a host and cook, peacefully departed this life on December 26, 2023. He was born in Shelby, NC, to John M. Kilgore and Ernestine Kilgore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Dardanita Hampton, John M. Kilgore, Jr., and Evelyn Hampton.

During his early years in Shelby and Badin, NC, Ron was a true country boy who cherished the outdoors. He had a deep connection to nature and often loved to share enlightening stories about his childhood adventures in these charming North Carolina towns.

Ron was a proud graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T), where he not only pursued his education but also shared his talents with the University Choir and became a respected member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity.

Throughout his esteemed career as a Respiratory Therapist, Ron earned well-deserved recognition and respect within the medical community. He dedicated his life to this profession, making significant contributions and even training others in his field across the country.

As a faithful member of Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church, Ron actively served as a Sunday School teacher, Co-Sunday School Superintendent and Men's Day coordinator. He was deeply committed to his church community and gave his time and talents generously. He was also a proud member of the NC A&T Twin City Alumni Chapter. Ron shared his passion for music as a member of the Twin City Choristers.

In addition to his musical talents, Ron was a skilled cook. He delighted in preparing delicious meals for family and friends, showcasing his culinary expertise. Football was another one of Ron's passions, particularly as an enthusiastic fan of NC A&T Aggie Football. He and his friends pioneered the beloved tradition of tailgating at Aggie games.

Ron was renowned for his gentlemanly demeanor, his leadership qualities, and his unwavering generosity with his time. He embodied the values of kindness and warmth, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Ron's legacy is woven into the countless meals he prepared at church gatherings and in his home. His graciousness and hospitality will be remembered by all.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Kendall Kilgore; three children, Ronald (Mondah), Randy, and Nicole; three grandsons, Reece, Ryan, and Caesar; sister, Shirley Baity; aunts, Pansy Clark and Essie Wall; sisters-in-law, E. Joanne Kilgore and Meria Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Ron leaves behind a legacy of love, warmth, and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of his family, friends, and community. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.

There will be no public viewing.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00am Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church with Reverend Johnny Ruff officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 9:30am until 10:00am on Saturday at the Church.
