Mr. Robert Dennis Jackson, Jr. departed this life on December 23, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Robert was born December 24, 1929 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Robert Dennis and Minnie Bynum Jackson.
He attended 14th Street Elementary, Atkins High School (Class of 1947) and earned a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S) in Elementary Education from Winston-Salem Teachers College (WSSU).
Robert served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Company where he was recognized for positive ideas that were accepted for improvement of the working conditions.
He was a member of the Senior Adult Ministry and a Gold Star member of the First Baptist Church (East).
Rob adopted the names "Stonewall Jackson" during his outstanding years of playing basketball at Atkins High School and the city playgrounds. Robert and his sister Naomi were inducted into the First Atkins High School Hall of Fame in June 2006. His extra-curricular activities included membership in the WSSU National Alumni-Kimberly Park Chapter; Atkins High School Class Reunion Group, Class of 1947 (he served as Amenities Chair of this group and Treasurer of the Class of 1947); East Winston Roundup; and American Legion Post #220.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Robert is survived by a son, Curtis L. Evans; a granddaughter, Twanna James (Desmond); a great-grandson, Desmond James; sisters, Naomi J. Jeffries, Lillie J. VanLandingham, Doris L. Jackson, Minnie J. Evans, and Shirley J. Scott; a foster sister, Naomi W. Jones; nieces, Daphne, Angela, Michelle, LaTeesha, and Lisa; nephews, Reginald and Cedric; a devoted and loyal friend, Beaulah Bunch; the Price and Mickle families; dependable buddies, Howard McCullough, Thomas Winningham, Charles Fair, and Ethel Price; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Saturday, December 27, 2008 from the First Baptist Church with Reverend Glenn Pettiford officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12Noon until 1pm on Saturday at the Church.
