Obituary

Mr. Robert Lee Eller of 5695 Reynold Road Winston-Salem, NC departed this life into his spiritual home on Sunday, August 23, 2015. He was born in Boomer, NC (Wilks County) on August 16, 1951 to Robert and Pearlee Eller.

He attended the Wilks County secondary schools, Wilksboro Community College, Winston-Salem State University where he received his bachelor's degree, and UNC Chapel Hill where he received his master's degree.

He was employed by the Winston-Salem Parks and Recreation Department. While working for the City of Winston-Salem, he also became the first sports editor of The Chronicle Newspaper. Mr. Eller was the recipient of many awards and special recognitions as a journalist and writer for the Chronicle Newspaper. He coached the medal winning Special Olympics team of Winston-Salem and the wheelchair basketball team, "The Smokers." He was the first Budweiser BET Sports Reporter and he introduced the state of North Carolina to Beep Ball for the blind softball players.

Mr. Eller was an active member of First Baptist Church-Highland Avenue Winston-Salem and devoted a considerable amount of his recent years to working with and educating the many youth and sometimes elder members of the church, assisting his longtime best friend, Dr. William "Rod" Warren in these endeavors. He also volunteered at many organizations including "HOPE" (Helping our People Eat.)

Mr. Eller was preceded in death by his father, Robert Eller; one brother, Michael Eller; and his sister, Alicia Eller-Scott.

Left to carry his legacy and cherish his memories are his wife, Dianna Eller; three children, Marcus (Casey) Dixon, Jamailya Eller (Hildred) Matthews, and Jamar Eller (Sandra) Crawford; eleven grandchildren, Justice, Leon, Raquain, Daquain, Christopher, Kayla, Javasee', Jaylen, Lanaudia, Aaleeya, and Ronnie; his mother, Pearlee Eller; one aunt, Roberta Howell; four nephews, Tee, Tory, TJ, and Brian; one niece, Tacara Eller; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30pm Saturday, August 29, 2015 at First Baptist Church, 700 N. Highland Ave. Winston-Salem, NC 27101 with Reverend Darryl Aaron officiating. The family visitation will be held from 3:00pm until 3:30pm on Saturday at the Church.
