Mr. Robert Leander "Bobby" Hunt, Sr. was born on Tuesday, November 6, 1934 to Jarvis Sylvester and Bessie Barker Hunt in Winston-Salem, NC. He passed away peacefully to join and direct the heavenly choir on Wednesday morning, July 23, 2008 at the Forsyth Medical Center after an extended period of illness.
Bobby attended the local public schools and upon graduation from high school, entered the US Navy. After his discharge, Bobby enrolled in Winston-Salem Teachers College (now WSSU) and received a BA degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Music. He also did further study and receive a BA degree in music from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. Upon graduation, Bobby became employed with the Robeson County School System, teaching 5th grade and music. He later became employed with the Rowan County Schools teaching music and chorus at Dunbar High School, East Spencer, NC. After observing Bobby's expertise with marching and concert bands, he was called to serve as band director at Anderson High School (home of the Bulldogs). In 1970, during the desegregation of schools in the city, Bobby was appointed band director of the Parkland Mustangs, and also taught music at Philo and Griffith Middle Schools. He retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System in 1989.
Spiritually, Bobby was a dedicated member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he served as senior choir director for several years. Bobby also served as choir director/pianist of the Inspiration Choir since its inception, of which he became a role model for each choir member. Bobby loved his pastor and church family.
Bobby was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Richard and Bronal Lewis Hunt.
Most memorable and cherished memories will be held in the hearts of his wife of 51 years, Doris D. Hunt; children, Sheilah H. Conner and Darla H. Woodruff (Michael) of Winston-Salem, NC, and Robert L. Hunt, II (Veronica) of Bowie, MD; a sister, Jacquelyn H. Nunn of the city and brother, William R. Hunt of Hartford, CT; five beautiful grandchildren whom he adored and served as caregivers, Arien J. Conner, Mariell D. Conner, Jonathon L. & Justin D. Woodruff of Winston-Salem, NC and Jontil B. Hunt of Bowie, MD; sister-in-law, Hazel Hunt of Atlanta, GA; brother-in-law, Alford L. Davis (Doris); son-in-law, William B. Conner of the city; devoted friends, Natalie and Trey Young and Timothy Davis; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 Noon Saturday, July 26, 2008 from the Saint Paul United Methodist Church with Reverend Donald Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11 am until 12 Noon on Saturday at the Church.
